2 Heading to War Thomas Jefferson re-elected in 1804
Britain + France still at war Still do not want to recognize the U.S. as neutral: attack trading ships and impress sailors A British warship attacks a U.S. ship, the Chesapeake in 1807. Congress passes the Embargo Act. Bans all imports and exports from and to foreign countries. A DISASTER!!! Supposed to hurt Britain, hurts U.S. merchants more.

Problems with natives on the frontier British helped natives resist U.S. expansion War Hawks: young Republicans from the West and South Wanted to go to war with Britain In retaliation for what Britain had done and for land Led by John C. Calhoun and Henry Clay

4 War of 1812: “Mr. Madison’s War”
Congress declares war on Britain in June of 1812, goes on for 3 years. British attack Washington, D.C. and burn the White House. Francis Scott Key writes “The Star-Spangled Banner” during the battle at Fort McHenry, near Balitmore.

5 Results Britain wins their war with France and doesn’t want to fight anymore Battle of New Orleans: final battle Young Andrew Jackson leads a spectacular victory Makes the people of the U.S. feel proud of “defeating” the British Makes the Federalists look silly and unpatriotic for opposing the war and Madison (end of the party).
