1 Paragraph Style Just so we’re clear...

2 What is a paragraph? -Different Definitions: A fully formed idea?
A breath of air? A microcosm?

3 What is a Narrative? Narrative writing:
-a story or account of events, experiences, or the like, whether true or fictitious. -personal writing -chronological order

4 Paragraph Structure A paragraph that stands alone has three main parts: 1. topic sentence: makes the subject and purpose of the paragraph clear. 2. supporting sentences: develop the topic sentence with specifics. 3. concluding sentence: provides a strong ending

5 Topic Sentence 1. States the main idea
2. Addresses one aspect of the subject that can be adequately covered in one paragraph 3. Controls the other sentences in the paragraph 4. Is more general than the sentences that develop it

6 Supporting Sentence 1. The supporting sentences in a paragraph meet expectations and answer questions raised by the topic sentence. 2. Develop your paragraph with supporting sentences that contain facts, examples, reasons, events, or specific details.

7 Concluding Sentence 1. The main purpose of the concluding sentence is to complete the paragraph. Most good concluding sentences are more general than supporting sentences. 2. You may restate the main idea, summarize the paragraph, evaluate the supporting details, or add insight.

8 Good Paragraphs Adequate Development
Supporting details must be numerous and specific enough to make the main idea clear, interesting, and convincing. These details can take the form of facts, examples, reasons, events, or descriptive images.

9 Good Paragraphs Unity All sentences must relate directly to the topic sentence. Ideas and details that stray from the main idea distract the reader and weaken the impact of the paragraph.

10 Good Paragraphs Coherence
All ideas are logically and smoothly related to one another. Keys to a coherent paragraph are logical organization and connecting devices.

11 Review -Development, Unity, Coherence, Keep it Concise -So...DUCK?
