5. Highlights: Second Great Awakening
A Protestant revival movement during the early 19th century in the United States.
The movement began in the 1790s and had gained momentum by the 1800.
Large numbers of individuals, primarily in the Baptist and Methodist denominations, began to return to the church.
Many saw the need for a revival as way to rid society of all evil.
Those that took part in the awakening preached to both whites and slaves alike. Even in the southern states.
The vast majority of those that were converts during the Second Great awakening were women. The movement was at an end by the late 1840s.

7. Religion Divides the Nation
Northerners and Southerners accepted different religious beliefs.
North: tended to be Presbyterians, Unitarians
South: tended to be Baptists, Methodists
“First the churches split, then the political parties split, then the Union splits.”
