1 NOTES Objectives Define Environment
Differentiate b/w an environmentalist & an environmental scientist Provide examples of humans altering natural systems NOTES Click on pic What is it?

2 What is the environment?
All the BIOTIC & ABIOTIC things around us that we interact with: BIOTIC: Living things Animals, plants, forests, fungi, etc. ABIOTIC: Non-living things Continents, oceans, clouds, soil, rocks, rain Activity: Cut out nature scene and label

3 Share your picture

4 Where do WE fit into this?
We change the environment to suit our needs…..often in ways we do not understand. We depend completely on the environment for survival. Increased wealth, health, mobility, leisure time Natural systems have been degraded. EX: pollution, erosion, & species extinction

5 Human Impact Hunting: Humans are responsible for the extinctions of large animals Prairies: Native Americans would burn trees to keep them from growing into the prairie – Keep grasslands Cities: 1) Clearing land (Deforestation) 2) Water cycle 3) Waste & Pollution

6 Human Impact cont. There is an issue
The perception of what constitutes an “Environmental Problem” varies b/w individuals and societies Ex: DDT, The Bug Truck Click on pic

7 What is Environmental Science?
It is the study of: How the natural world works How humans interact with the systems of the Earth How the environment affects humans and vice versa

8 E.S. Cont. It has an applied goal: Developing solutions to environmental problems It is the most interdisciplinary field of science around. It is strongly affected by people’s emotions: Enviromental Worldview: One’s belief as to how we should manage the Earth.

10 Figures in E.S. Ecologic Footprint:
The amt. of biologically productive land & water needed to supply each person or population with the renewable resources they use and to absorb or dispose of the wastes from such resource use. Usually measured in hectares (ha). 1 mi2 = 259 ha It measures the avg. environmental impact of individuals or pop. In different countries & areas.

11 Activity: Trace your footprint and research 5 facts to put your foot
Activity: Trace your footprint and research 5 facts to put your foot. Share with class.

12 Ecological footprint Varies person to person and country to country.
The world average is 2.6 ha (2014) The U.S. average is 9.6 ha (2014). Why are these numbers an issue? As of 2010, there were 1.7 ha of biologically productive land available to every human on the planet. 70 million people are added to the planet yearly. That’s 140 people per MINUTE! As population goes up, demand for resources goes up, footprint goes up.

13 Figure in E.S. Environmental Impact (IPAT):
This refers to an equation derived in the 1970s that is used to determine the environmental impact of humans.

14 Cont. The average American consumes about 100x more than the avg. person in the world’s poorest countries. Parents in these countries would have to have 70 – 200 children to have the same lifetime resource consumption as 2 American children.

15 Don’t forget how lucky we are to live in this country!!!
