2 PERCEPTION OF SELF AND OTHERS
What does the word “perception” mean to you? Give an example. Perception: the process of using your senses to gather and process information about your surroundings.

3 STAGES OF PERCEPTION STAGE 1: TAKING IN INFORMATION
Sensory information: touch, taste, smell, hear, see STAGE 2: ORGANIZING THE INFORMATION Your brain sorts it, so you can interpret it! STAGE 3: INTERPRETING THE INFORMATION Your brain assigns meaning to it!

4 Why Our Perceptions Differ…
Physical Functions: how your brain works, your health, age, gender, size, sharpness of senses, how you feel that day. Background: where you grew up, how you were raised, prior knowledge about the subject. Mood: (we ALL know how this affects perception, right?) Focus: varies depending on what you are thinking about.

5 How would you describe yourself TO yourself?
self-concept How would you describe yourself TO yourself? Jot down some ideas. Our self-concept affects your behavior, communication style, and how others perceive you.

6 YOUR PHYSICAL TASK! TOUCH YOUR TOES DO TEN JUMPING JACKS

8 IN THE REAL WORLD Turn to a partner and talk about the times you:
1. Had a misperception about someone or yourself. 2. Used intrapersonal communication to form a perception about yourself; 1 good, 1 bad. 3. Caused others to have a certain perception of you. (for example, how you interact with different sets of people in your life: close friends, strangers, teachers, authority figures.
