2 Declaring Independence Targets:
I can describe the American Revolution and explain it's effects and consequences. I can compare and contrast a Patriot to a Loyalist. I can analyze and interpret the Declaration of Independence. I can identify and describe important people, places, and events linked to the Revolutionary War.

5 Declaring Independence
Thomas Paine was the author or Common Sense. Richard Henry Lee introduced a resolution to declare independence from England. Thomas Jefferson wrote most of the Declaration of Independence.

6 No Taxation without Representation
Patriot or Loyalist? No Taxation without Representation Long live the king God save the king

7 John Locke believed that citizens have 3 natural rights that must be protected by the government: life, liberty and ownership of property. Today we refer to them as life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. If a government violates these rights, the people have a right to abolish their government and create a new one.

8 George Washington – leader of the Continental Army
The group that operated as the government for the colonists during the war was called the Continental Congress.

9 Preamble is an introduction.
Grievances are formal complaints; listed in the Declaration of Independence they were complaints against King George III of England. The Declaration of Independence was approved on July 4, 1776 (Independence Day)
