3 Expectations for Success:
Curriculum Night ~ 6th Grade CATS Expectations for Success: Follow STORM rules and CATS Code; we are an Anti-Bullying school! Team Communication Read and study... Study and read! Be responsible and organized. “It’s not about doing what you love, but loving what you do.”

4 Curriculum Night ~ 6th Grade CATS
Reading/ELA: 7th grade level and above Math: Accelerated pre-Algebra; expectation is that students will take Algebra I (Year 1) in 7th grade and have the option to take Geometry (Year 2) and Algebra II (Year 3) concurrently in 8th grade. Science/Social Studies: 6th grade with enrichment via Problem-Based Learning projects.

Curriculum – Reading: Comprehension and Vocabulary Students will acquire and use new vocabulary in relevant contexts; read fluently at or above grade level; employ strategies to comprehend grade level or above text; identify, analyze, and apply knowledge of the structures and elements of literature.  Reading strategies in the content areas of math, science, and social studies Bi-weekly vocabulary and spelling tests 20 minutes of self-selected reading in school and for homework. Literary Elements Junior Great Books and classic short stories – Quality literature selections used for critical thinking activities via Socratic Seminar Curriculum related novels are also utilized. Non-fiction pieces are integrated as well. Writing is integrated in all core subject areas including Reading, World History, Science, and Math.

Curriculum – Math: Opportunities provided for additional help or enrichment to prepare for Algebra I (Year 1) in 7th grade CATS program and beyond. Guided lessons including note-taking practice and critical-thinking activities. Integration of higher level Depth of Knowledge activities to further explore and retain fundamental mathematical concepts Utilizing technology, to reinforce and enhance math concepts.

7 Curriculum Night ~ 6th Grade CATS
Curriculum – Science: 6th grade science topics include Life Science (cells, organisms, ecosystems), Physical Science (forms of energy) and Earth Science (water cycle, weather). Students will also prepare projects for Science Fair to be held in January 2018. Genius Hour projects will be held year-long in preparation for the spring CATalyst for Change Fair. Parents with a background or experience in any of these areas are welcome to come in and share!

8 Curriculum – World History:
Curriculum Night ~ 6th Grade CATS Curriculum – World History: 6th grade social studies covers Ancient History including, but not limited to Egypt, Greece, Rome, China, and the Middle Ages. Students will be given the opportunity to develop extended projects to demonstrate their understanding of world cultures and their significance, and to make connections to today’s modern world. Content will be enriched using projects and Problem-Based Learning models.

Our classroom abides by all rules and policies as stated in the CUSD Student Handbook Homework – No more than 60 min. per evening, which includes 20 minutes of independent, self-selected reading. Make Up Work – It is the student’s responsibility to see me about missed assignments due to an excused absence. (1 day absent = 2 days to turn in an assignment) Progress Reports/Report Cards – Graded work will be sent home at least once a week. Parents may check their students grades via Infinite Campus at any time.

Curriculum Night ~ 6th Grade CATS Rules and Policies, cont. Cell Phones – May not be on one’s person during the school day; students must turn the ringer off and leave in their backpack, unless given teacher permission to do so. Students using their phones inappropriately will have them confiscated and given to Mrs. O’Neal or Mr. Durham. Discipline – Good behavior is rewarded with occasional surprises such as treats or extra recess. Negative conduct will be communicated to parents and the appropriate consequence given (missed recess, infractions, detention, etc.).
