2 I. Geography Questions A. What impact does geography have on our lives? How would your life be different if you lived in a… 1. Desert? 2. On an island? 3. In the rainforest? B. What is physical geography (what does physical mean)? Physical geography includes landforms, bodies of water, climate, soil quality, resources, and plant & animal life. C. What is human geography (what does human mean)? Human geography studies where people live, economic activities, religious beliefs, and languages. D. How do both physical and human geography affect people?

3 II. Ethnocentrism A. What two words can you see in the single word ethnocentrism? i. Ethnic (meaning your ethnicity, your background or culture) and center (meaning most important) ii. What does an ethnocentric person believe about their own culture? What about other cultures? a. Someone who is ethnocentric believes their culture is the greatest and that all other cultures aren’t as great. B. Why do we call China the “far east”? i. Clue: Which map are you used to seeing? C. Americans call China the “far east” because we think of America as the center of the world and China seems far away. If you were in China, America would be the “far east”!

7 III. Map Question… A. What kind of map was the map you just drew was it a… i. Physical Map? How do you know this? or a… ii. Human Map? How do you know this? B. It was a human map because it showed what humans made, this classroom! It would have been physical if it showed what was here before the school (the hills, types of grass, etc.)
