1 Sentence parts and phrases

2 Sentence Subjects The subject of the sentence is found within the part of the sentence about which something is performing the action. It tells us who or what the sentence is about. Examples: Mr. Pope graded those papers yesterday. My favorite ice cream is mint chocolate chip.

3 Sentence Predicates The predicate tells us what the subject is doing. It contains the verb within the sentence. Examples: My older sister broke her foot. Uncle Chip asked for directions.

4 Prepositional Phrases
A group of words that begin with a preposition and end with a noun or pronoun. Examples: Rosa Parks exhibited bravery on the bus. Her leadership contributed to the Civil Rights Movement.

5 Direct Objects A noun or pronoun that follows an action verb and receives the action. Examples: Lucy kicked the soccer ball. Maddie crossed her fingers.

6 Indirect Objects A noun or pronoun that comes before a direct object and indirectly receives the action. Examples: Lucy kicked Jay the soccer ball Maddie baked Josh some cookies.
