1 17/05/2019 Atoms and Elements W Richards Worthing High School

2 Atoms 17/05/2019 Atoms are the “building blocks” of all matter and are the simplest form of molecule. They are all made up of protons, neutrons and electrons. They look something like this: The Nucleus – this contains neutrons and protons Electrons – these orbit around the nucleus

3 These atoms are ALL iron – there’s nothing else in here
Elements 17/05/2019 If a solid, liquid or gas is made up of only one type of atom we say it is an element. For example, consider a tripod made up of iron: These atoms are ALL iron – there’s nothing else in here

4 Sodium chloride (salt)
Compounds 17/05/2019 Compounds are different to elements. They contain different atoms. Here are some examples: Sodium chloride (salt) Methane Glucose

5 Some simple compounds…
17/05/2019 Methane, CH4 Carbon dioxide, CO2 Water, H2O Key Hydrogen Oxygen Carbon Sulphur Sulphuric acid, H2SO4 Ethyne, C2H2

6 Elements and symbols that you should know:
17/05/2019 Elements and symbols that you should know: Part 1 – The obvious ones: Hydrogen Helium Lithium Beryllium Boron Carbon Nitrogen H He Li Be B C N Oxygen Fluorine Neon Magnesium Aluminium Silicon Phosphorus O F Ne Mg Al Si P

7 Some more obvious ones:
17/05/2019 Some more obvious ones: Sulphur Chlorine Argon S Cl Ar 18) Calcium 19) Zinc Ca Zn The less obvious ones: Sodium Potassium Iron Copper Silver Na K Fe Cu Ag 6) Tin 7) Gold 8) Mercury 9) Lead Sn Au Hg Pb
