3 Remember the Ming dynasty
Remember the Ming dynasty ? How did they feel about mixing with foreigners ? HATED IT? They ISOLATED China at the worst possible time!

4 The British seemed to have their hands on everything.

The British wanted to trade cotton for Chinese tea, but the Chinese didn’t want anything the British had. What to do? 8 The Chinese gov’t. tried to stop this illegal drug by passing harsh laws (smugglers who were caught faced death). In 1839, the Chinese emperor ordered a large British shipment of opium destroyed! This led to two Opium Wars (1840 & 1858), in which Britain crushed China, and continued to trade opium all over the country. By 1905, more than a quarter of the male population of china had become addicted to opium.
