BUCS POINTS OVERVIEW AARON CAMPBELL SPORTS PROGRAMME MANAGER

INTRODUCTION BUCS Points – More important to more universities Funding, prestige and even bragging rights! History Current Points System Future – Input from you

HISTORY... Working Group set up September 2005 Aims & Principles of Working Group To create a more consistent, transparent system of awarding points The overall points table will remain primarily a measure of competition results. There should remain only one overall points table. The opportunity to win points will be available to a wider range of teams and individuals, resulting in a more competitive overall points table for institutions

POINTS SYSTEM Three distinct areas of competition that BUCS awards points to: League finishing positions Knockout finishing position Individual & Team Championships

LEAGUE & KNOCKOUT POINTS Awarded to all teams competing in the BUCS leagues, usually on Wednesday afternoons, dependent on their league finishing position. Half points awarded for conceding one walkover in season. No points awarded for conceding two or more walkovers in season. Knockout points not awarded if team is knocked out in the first round. No points if team concedes a walkover at any stage of knockouts.

INDIVIDUAL & TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS Top four finishers in individual competitions receive BUCS points. Only Championship (or equivalent top level competition) receive BUCS points, no points awarded to Trophy/Novice/Intermediate level. Relays & overall team results extracted from individual scores/times gain more points, up to eight places. Team Championships for those sports that do not have separate team leagues (e.g. Korfball, Frisbee, Canoe Polo) receive similar points to that of a Wednesday afternoon team competition.

THE FUTURE FOR BUCS POINTS Proposal for the new Advisory Group to look at current points set up. Should BUCS points include other aspects of university sport? Facilities Intramural Participation Number of student coaches/officials Feedback from all universities, Athletic Unions & Directors of Sport. What do you feel should be done differently...if anything?
