Job market changes quickly (fig. 24.1) Thinking in new ways Average worker changes jobs 8 times before the age of 32 Your career & job security are in your own hands Downsizing – eliminating jobs in a company to promote efficiency or to cut costs…everyone is affect even if they still have a job 1. Jobs that once employed a majority of the population have become much less significant 5/16/2019

3 Keeping up Companies invest heavily in training & education
Make use of all opportunities to keep your skills & knowledge up-to-date Become a lifelong learner Develop solid reading, writing, speaking, math, & listening skills Get involved in new technology right away 1. AT&T spends about $7 Billion annually on training…the average AT&T employee receives a little more than a week of training every year 5/16/2019

4 Growing up in your job Continue to update & improve your skills & knowledge Makes you valuable to employer May help you get a promotion Job advancement to a position of greater responsibility & authority Offers new challenges Increased income as well! 5/16/2019

5 Who gets promoted? People who have shown they can handle additional responsibility & authority Seniority Knowledge & competence Willingness to learn Initiative Perseverance Cooperativeness Thinking skills Adaptability Education & training 2. Position you achieve by working for a sustained length of time…usually thought of as indicating greater experience & dependability 6. Quality of finishing what you start. Most employers will respect your judgment Avoid closing the door on future offers Let supervisor know the specific reasons why you are not accepting promotion Leave them with the impression that you like your work & want to be considered for future promotions 5/16/2019

Why change jobs? Should never be a snap decision Analyze what is missing from your current job & what you want from a new one Not happy Want to grow – it is possible to outgrow your job Job was terminated - downsizing Sometimes you may choose change because you want to seek new opportunities. At other times, the change may be forced on you by events you can’t control. 5/16/2019
