3 SECTIONALISM INDUSTRIAL NORTH
The Northern section of the United States became highly industrialized. Factories could mass produce goods. The Northern part of the country had an extensive railroad system. Tariffs placed on foreign made goods hurt the southern states economically. People Identified themselves as a Northerner. SOUTHERN AGRICULTURE The southern part of the United States main economic activity was agriculture. Huge plantations required slave labor. The southern states were unhappy with tariffs placed on foreign goods. They were forced to buy goods from the North. People identified themselves as a Southerner.

6 SLAVE SHIP SLAVERY One of the causes of the Civil War was Slavery
Southern Plantation owners needed a slave labor force to work the plantation in order to make a profit. The Northern part of the United States were against slavery SLAVE SHIP

7 STATES’ RIGHTS When the U.S. Constitution was written the controversial issue of slavery was left up to the individual state. The Missouri Compromise maintained a balance of power between the North and the South. When new states were admitted one would be a free state and one would be a slave state. The Louisiana Territory would be divided at about 36 degrees 30 min. North latitude. To the North it would be free to the South slavery could exist.

8 STATES’ RIGHTS The Compromise of 1850 Henry Clay senator from Kentucky debated on the spread of slavery in newly acquired territory of California from Mexico. Also there was a territorial dispute with Texas. Washington D.C. was the center of slave trade in the United States. According to the compromise Texas was to give up disputed territory, but would be compensated and pay off its debt to Mexico (10 million dollars). Western territories would be organized without mention of slavery. Slave trade would be abolished in Washington D.C. The Fugitive Slave Act was passed which made it possible to recover escaped slaves in the free states or territories.

9 STATES’ RIGHTS Nullification means a “state veto” a state could declare a law unconstitutional. Abraham Lincoln was running for the presidency and he was an anti-slavery leader. After he was elected president, southern states declared that the unrestricted rights of majority rule was tyranny. Therefore, they had a right to secede or leave the Union to protect their freedom. The Union which they had voluntarily joined they had a right to leave.

11 Fort Sumter is located in Charleston Harbor in South Carolina
Fort Sumter is located in Charleston Harbor in South Carolina. It was a Union fort in a state that seceded. On April 22, the Confederate troops attacked the fort. 34 hours later Union foreces surrendered. During the next four years the Union forces tried to regain the fort. The firing on Fort Sumter by the Confederate Army was the opening battle of the Civil War

Battle of Gettysburg: Robert E. Lee’s Confederate forces were turned back by the Army of the Potomac. Gettysburg Address was Lincoln's second inaugural address. Battle of Vicksburg General Grant and Union forces captured Vicksburg cutting the Confederate states in half. Emancipation Proclamation declared that slaves in states currently in rebellion were free. The Civil War lasted from
