2 Physics In Practice Unit “Physics In Use”
Coursework Support and Preparation Tuesday, 07 May 2019 2

3 Learning Objective Develop understanding of materials coursework, methods of presentation and key things to include. Tuesday, 07 May 2019 3

4 Learning Outcomes ALL MUST:
Be able to state what is required for the Physics in Use piece of coursework. MOST SHOULD: Be familiar with the marking criteria and identify key things that must be included. SOME COULD: Be able to explain how to reference correctly and apply this to their own research. Grade E Grade C Grade A Tuesday, 07 May 2019 4

5 Physics in Use (10 marks, 7% of AS)
Read through the student briefing in pairs. LESSON OBJECTIVES: ALL MUST: Be able to state what is required for the Physics in Use piece of coursework. MOST SHOULD: Be familiar with the marking criteria and identify key things that must be included. SOME COULD: Be able to explain how to reference correctly and apply this to their own research.

6 Physics In Use A “presentation” on the use, properties and
structure of a material. The presentation should show relationships between the properties and uses of the material. Some aspect of the wider context, for example, a social, historical, economic or personal context should be considered.

7 Dates Week beginning Monday13th October – Friday 17th October. Choose presentation technique – choose material and context – start gathering useful data. Monday 3rd November – Hand in Presentation Planning Sheet Continue research and start to put together presentation. Final submission Monday 1st December am.

8 Marks 2 strands of 5 marks each. Quality of the research and
Marked out of 10. (about 7% of AS) 2 strands of 5 marks each. Quality of the research and presentation 2. Use and understanding of Physics LESSON OBJECTIVES: ALL MUST: Be able to state what is required for the Physics in Use piece of coursework. MOST SHOULD: Be familiar with the marking criteria and identify key things that must be included. SOME COULD: Be able to explain how to reference correctly and apply this to their own research.

9 Late submission carries zero marks
NOTE This gives six for a piece of work that has a recommended time of about six or seven hours! Late submission carries zero marks Absence on submission day requires medical certification. Failure to submit because of problems with printer, losing files etc will not be accepted. Adverse weather?? You would be expected to submit WITHOUT FAIL the next day.

10 Methods of Presentation
Poster Leaflet Presentation Webpage ????? Think about your personality – choose the presentation technique that will access the highest marks for you. NOTE You can access full marks using any of the above presentation techniques LESSON OBJECTIVES: ALL MUST: Be able to state what is required for the Physics in Use piece of coursework. MOST SHOULD: Be familiar with the marking criteria and identify key things that must be included. SOME COULD: Be able to explain how to reference correctly and apply this to their own research.

11 Marking Criteria LESSON OBJECTIVES: ALL MUST: Be able to state what is required for the Physics in Use piece of coursework. MOST SHOULD: Be familiar with the marking criteria and identify key things that must be included. SOME COULD: Be able to explain how to reference correctly and apply this to their own research.

12 LESSON OBJECTIVES: ALL MUST: Be able to state what is required for the Physics in Use piece of coursework. MOST SHOULD: Be familiar with the marking criteria and identify key things that must be included. SOME COULD: Be able to explain how to reference correctly and apply this to their own research.

13 10 Commandments for a cracking piece of coursework!
In your pairs look at the marking criteria and draft a checklist of 10 things that you should ensure are done before you even think about handing in your work.

14 Time to look at some examples.
Choose a poster. Using the marking criteria on one colour post it make a note one good point. One another colour make a note of one negative point. Stick the post its to the poster. We will then move around adding additional comments each time.

15 Preparing slides/transparencies
Think what you want the slide to do for you. Remember, less is more. A paper record of the presentation must be available in a form which can be easily be sent to moderators thi LESSON OBJECTIVES: ALL MUST: Be able to state what is required for the Physics in Use piece of coursework. MOST SHOULD: Be familiar with the marking criteria and identify key things that must be included. SOME COULD: Be able to explain how to reference correctly and apply this to their own research.

16 What do research posters look like?
Examples can be downloaded from these sites: (posters can be down- loaded from this site) LESSON OBJECTIVES: ALL MUST: Be able to state what is required for the Physics in Use piece of coursework. MOST SHOULD: Be familiar with the marking criteria and identify key things that must be included. SOME COULD: Be able to explain how to reference correctly and apply this to their own research.

17 Standard format of a research poster Name(s) of author(s) Address of institution
Introduction Background information on the research covered in the poster. Results & discussion This part of the poster covers the results of the research, presenting them in a concise and accessible fashion. The use of tables, graphs and diagrams is recommended. The significance of the research and its links to other areas of research should be discussed. Results & discussion cont. Aim Typically covers the aims and objectives of the research that is covered in the poster. Conclusions The key results and outcomes should be summarised here. Methods This is not found in all posters. This contains the details of the experimental procedures & methods used in the research. Bibliography Include references to all sources of information.
