Topic 3 Heat transfer Conduction Natural Sciences - Grade 7

3 Natural Sciences - Grade 7
Conduction Conduction – is the transfer of heat between solid objects that are in direct physical contact with each other. Heat Energy can be transferred between different parts of an object, or between objects that are touching each other. In conduction the heat energy travels from the source of heat through the object, or from the warmer object to the cooler object until they have the same temperature. Natural Sciences - Grade 7

4 Natural Sciences - Grade 7
Conduction Another example of conduction: Conduction of heat energy can take place between a solid and a liquid or a gas. When you make yourself a hot cup of coffee, heat energy is transferred from the hot coffee to the cup and the spoon. You will observe that both the cup and the spoon become warm. This is one good example of conduction from a liquid to a solid. Natural Sciences - Grade 7

5 Natural Sciences - Grade 7
Key Words Conductors – Substances that easily transfer heat energy. Insulators – Substances that do not easily transfer heat energy. Natural Sciences - Grade 7

6 Natural Sciences - Grade 7
Key Words Variables – Factors that can change, are measurable and observable. Fixed variables – variables that are kept constant (the same) whenever the investigation is being conducted. [use nails; paperclips; pins; etc.]. Natural Sciences - Grade 7
