1 Clinical Information Tool Project
DXS Best Pathway Dr. Jonathan Millar Clinical Lead for IM&T, N&W Reading CCG

2 What is the Berkshire West DXS Clinical Information Tool?
A clinical decision support tool that is integrated with GP systems Displays local clinical pathways, referral criteria, referral forms and patient leaflets at the point of care Includes a library of national guidance (such as NICE and SIGN guidance) and patient leaflets (such as patient.co.uk leaflets) How does it work? Based on clinical read codes entered into the GP system during consultations, local CCG content and national content is presented to clinicians during the consultation. In addition to providing clinical information to GPs, local, self-populating and editable referral forms are also made available through DXS. Referral forms are saved back into the GP system once complete or as a draft to be completed later.

4 Why Do We Need a Clinical Information Tool?
GP sees an elderly patient with hip arthritis GP remembers there has been some recent local guidance related to this GP tries and fails to find this guidance GP decides to just go ahead with a referral Referral is bounced, patient loses faith in the system and the GP is frustrated

5 The Problem GPs currently have to search for guidance across a range of sources such as the intranet, various websites, shared drives, etc. which is time consuming GPs are not always able to find the information they are looking for GPs are not always sure if the referral forms and guidance they are using are up to date

6 DXS as a Solution GP sees arthritic patient – enters Read code
A button on the screen illuminates to say ‘Click Here – Hip Arthritis Guidance Available’ One click and the GP can review the guidance One more click and the referral form is completed, fully mail-merged and ready to send The guidance and forms are updated centrally and automatically downloaded overnight All GP practices have up-to-date information Admin staff no longer have to upload documents to their intranets, or set up mail merge fields in forms

Implementation Implementation update: Currently being installed in practices in Berkshire West DXS have made contact with all practices to book training Slots available for on site and virtual training sessions Virtual sessions mean that practices can book staff onto different sessions so that not everyone in the practice has to attend the same training slot We expect that all practices will have been installed and have received training by mid-June For any queries regarding installations or training please contact Alison Fairley at
