The Mockingjay in The Hunger Games represents (symbolizes) rebellion, resistance, power, and freedom. Holden’s red hunting hat in The Catcher in the Rye represents (symbolizes) uniqueness, individuality, and lack of conformity. The rabbits in Of Mice and Men represent (symbolize) hope, and dreams of the future.

4 Harlem After you read: 1.What are the similes in the poem? 2.What do they all have in common? 3.What is the tone of the poem? (Tone: The author’s feelings) 4.What is the mood of the poem? (Mood: How the poem makes the reader feel) 5.What do you think the poem means? What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up Like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore— And then run? Does it stink like rotten meat? Or crust and sugar over— Like a syrupy sweet? Maybe it just sags Like a heavy load. Or does it explode? -Langston Hughes
