3 1. Who Can Participate? Democracy or Dictatorship?
Abraham Lincoln’s definition of democracy from the Gettysburg Address in 1863 “government of the people, by the people, for the people”. Direct democracy- Everyone participates Indirect democracy- Representative government where a small group of people are chosen to carry out the will of the people The people are sovereign; we rule!

Autocracy & Oligarchy are the two types of dictatorships both are authoratarian Autocracy-a single person holds all of the power (Hitler, Mussolini, & Stalin & more currently Qaddafi of Libya 2011-Arab Spring) often militaristic Oligarchy-a small self-appointed elite have all of the power

Unitary Government –a single central organization or agency that holds all government powers Britain’s Parliament is an example Federal Government – central government and several local governments share power in a division of powers U.S. Government and State governments share powers

Presidential – a separation of powers between executive and legislative branches Coequal Chief Executive =President Both branches operate independently and have powers over the other U.S. invented this form of government

3. Relationship Between Legislative & Executive Branch Presidential or Parliamentary? Parliamentary – The executive is made up of a Prime Minister and official cabinet The Prime Minister and cabinet are members of the Parliament or legislative branch The Prime Minister is the leader of the majority party and are chosen by the party NOT the people Majority of the world has this form of government Theresa May replaced David Cameron who resigned due to Brexit
