What are some examples of relationships with a power imbalance? Balance of Power Examples: Parent/Child Coach/Player Someone physically stronger/Someone physically weaker Team captain/New player Activity leader/Activity participant Power can be PHYSICAL, SOCIAL, FINANCIAL, INTELLECTUAL What are some examples of relationships in which the power is balanced?

5 Remember this story from last class
Remember this story from last class? Twist and Leona get into a fight at the bus stop. What is the power like in this relationship? – balanced. How do you know? – they’re friends, they don’t seem to have a popularity differential, strength differential, ?

6 Conflict or Violence? In the story about Twist and Liona, was their fight VIOLENCE or CONFLICT? CONFLICT Disagreement, argument, or accidental boundary crossing. Conflict is a normal part of every relationship. VIOLENCE Aggression, intentionally causing harm, or threatening to cause harm. Violence is not a part of safe relationships.

7 Scenario: Ray sent embarrassing photos of Volt through social media to her new friends. How do you think Volt feels? What is the power dynamic in this relationship? Was this CONFLICT or VIOLENCE?

8 What Should Jumps Do? Jumps probably feels EMBARASSED, ASHAMED, and REJECTED. He was hurt and betrayed by someone he considered a friend. IF students included this step in their role-play, praise their decision. IF students did not, make sure they understand why it is important, and in any conflict it’s an important first step.

9 Conflict Resolution STOP – stop your thoughts and actions
BREATHE – calm your brain IDENTIFY the problem ASSERTIVELY EXPLAIN your perspective LISTEN WITH EMPATHY and restate the other person’s perspective Brainstorm SOLUTIONS AGREE on a solution Discuss both sides. SCRIPT???
