1 Figurative Language Simile- compares two things using like or as. Example: Today, the rain was like a raging waterfall!

2 Figurative Language Metaphor-compares two things directly. It doesn’t use like or as. Example: He is a monster today!

3 Figurative Language Personification-Making an object have human qualities. Example: The tree whistled in the wind.

4 Figurative Language Onomatopoeia- Making a word have a sound. Example: Pow! Boom! Meow, moo, etc.

5 Figurative Language Alliteration-Using the same consonant at the beginning of some words in a sentence. Example: The snake slithered softly through the grass.

6 Hyperbole Exaggeration Example: We have tons of homework tonight.

7 Idiom Any expression peculiar to a language whose meaning cannot be understood simply from the meanings of the words composing it. Example: She was just pulling your leg when she said there would be no test today.
