1 Rainforests Y3/4 Spring Term 2019
Mathematics Please note, Year 3 and 4 will occasionally focus on different mathematics skills. We are learning about: Reading and writing time on analogue and digital clocks Using <, > and = to describe if numbers are more or less than another Representing and interpreting data in tally and bar charts Identifying negative numbers in different contexts Adding and subtracting numbers in different contexts using the column method. Methods for multiplication and dividing Creating an understanding of capacity and weight Studying various 2D and 3D shapes Tips - Please support your children by helping them to learn their times-tables. You can help your child further develop their knowledge of time and money by questioning them as opportunities arise. You may also wish to give your child reasoning questions to help them to further develop their reasoning skills and encourage them to engage in Mathletics regularly at home. Science and Technology Science The human body Bones – human and animal Teeth –visit from a dentist Healthy food Digestion Tips- Please encourage your child to find facts, questions and answers about the body for our class ‘Wonderwall’. ICT Appreciate what databases are and the value of using them. Learn to plan and create a database. Mathletics IT based learning at school and home. D.T. Homework tasks involve creating models of a rainforest , which will be supplemented and extended within school. Literacy Language and Communication English This term we are focussing on the text Mr Stink by David Walliams. We will be using this txt to engage learners in a variety of different reading, writing and oracy tasks including the following: Making inferences Use of descriptive language Skimming and scanning Creating Sociograms and Venn diagrams, Studying similarities and differences Writing reading and performing playscripts. Creating recounts and using the text to engage in creative writing tasks. Following our work on Mr Stink we will be studying the narrative work of other cultures. Welsh Year 3 and 4 will be engaging in separate welsh topics due to the differing ability levels. Year 3 – Past tense writing, opinions on clothing, writing postcards, The story of St David, studying welsh culture Year 4 – Reading and writing the time, describing daily routines, creating posters and book reviews, poetry Rainforests Y3/4 Spring Term 2019 Health and Wellbeing PE Games – ball and racket skills Gymnastics – sequences using jumps and rolls. Basketball – We are lucky to have Newport Live coming into school on Wednesdays this term to teach and promote ball skills and motor development. Tips- please ensure that your child’s PE kit is brought to school each week (Wednesday for Celyn, Friday for Bedw and Poplys). Black shorts and a plain red t-shirt, trainers/plimsolls. Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning Lessons regarding SEAL are planned in response to events and issues within the school and wider world. These may include aspects of bullying, getting along with others, safe pay and responsibility. Expressive Arts Art We will be studying the rainforest as a medium for developing our artistic skills through shading, collages, textures, perspective, shape and, linked to our Design and Technology work, modelling. Music We will study the music of the rainforest, listening to and appraising various genres of music, creating sound effects and writing and performing pieces. Drama Learners will develop their dramatic skills through our whole Year Group assembly Humanities Geography The bulk of our rainforest topic will come through our Geographical learning. Children will study the location of rainforests around the world using their mapping skills, they will identify the various layers of the rainforest and what lurks within them. They will also study the effect of deforestation and how it positively and negatively affects people, animals and the environment. RE We will be continuing our work in RE from our previous festivals topic as well studying the cultures and religions of the tribes within the rainforest.
