1 Acids&Bases!

2 Acid Properties Aqueous solutions are sour
Acids will change the color of acid-base indicators, from red to blue Some acids react with active metals to produce hydrogen gas Acids react with bases to produce salts and water Acids conduct electrical current

3 Base Properties Aqueous solutions are bitter
Bases will change the color of acid-base indicators, from blue to red Dilute aqueous solutions pf base are slippery Bases react with acids to produce salts and water Bases conduct electrical currents

4 Litmus Papers Litmus papers are red or blue and are used to test if a liquid is an acid or a base When a base touches a red litmus paper, the paper will turn blue When an acid touches a blue litmus paper, the paper will turn red

5 Binary Acids Binary Acids are made up of only two elements
One of these must be hydrogen The other can be any of the most electronegative elements

6 A Binary acid’s name always begins with Hydro-
The root of the second element’s name comes after The name ends with -ic

7 Oxyacids Oxyacids are made up of three different elements
The first two must be hydrogen, and oxygen The third element is what gives the acid its identity Sulfuric acid, or H2SO4 is one of these, with the unique element being sulfur
