1 Matter What is matter?

2 Matter: What is it? Defined as anything that has mass and takes up space. Everything around you is made up of matter A chocolate cake is made up of matter You are made up of matter

3 Matter continued: Matter can be small or large
All matter is made up of atoms and molecules Objects can be made up of different atoms Example: Gold is made up of Gold atoms Salt is made up of two different atoms: sodium atoms and chloride atoms

4 Physical Properties of Matter
Any quality or condition of a substance that can be seen or measured without changing the substances identity. For Example: color, solubility, odor, hardness, melting point, and state of matter Remember Density is a physical property

5 States of Matter Solid Liquid Gas

6 Microscopic view of a solid
Solids Definite volume Definite shape Atoms are packed together if fixed positions Strong attractive forces between atoms Only vibrate in place

7 Microscopic view of a liquid
Liquids Definite volume Indefinite shape Atoms are close together Atoms can overcome attractive forces to flow

8 Microscopic view of a gas
Gases Indefinite volume and shape Atoms move very fast Atoms are far apart Weak attractive forces

9 Changes in Matter Physical Change Chemical Change

10 Physical change change in a substance that doesn’t change the identity of the substance Example: Includes all changes in the state of matter (physical changes of a substance from one state to another) Grinding cutting Melting boiling

11 Changes in the state of matter
deposition

12 Chemical change a change in which a substance is converted into a different substance same as chemical reaction doesn’t change the amount of matter present

13 Signs of a chemical change
Energy is absorbed or given off (change in temperature) change in color or odor production of gas Irreversible

14 Chemical or Physical Change?
Water boils Salt dissolves in water Milk spoils A metal chair rusts Paper is torn A tree burns down physical physical chemical chemical physical chemical
