2 1. I will set the timer for 3 minutes
1. I will set the timer for 3 minutes. You are to find the pattern, and determine how many toothpicks would be in the next diagram, and the 10th diagram. 2. When timer goes off, I set it again for 1 minute for you to talk with your neighbors. 3. I randomly call on 3 students to share how they saw the pattern and if they had an equation for it.

3 Writing and Expanding Expressions
Today I will be able to: create equivalent expressions Identify parts of an expression using math terms Write expressions that record operations with numbers and with letters standing for numbers. So I can write an expression using the fewest number of symbols or characters, or write expressions in expanded form and also be able to identify the parts of an expression using math terms. I will show I know it when I can write the expressions to solve at least 6 out of 10 whiteboard problems with at least 80% accuracy. 6.EE.A.2b 6.EE.A.4.

4 Vocabulary: Expression standard form expanded form Parts Product
Double Factor Term Coefficient Constant variable

5 Let’s start to get familiar with some of our terms… 

12 On your whiteboards Re-write in standard form 5 * 2 * 2 * y * z 20yz

13 On your whiteboards Re-write in expanded form 20yz 5 * 2 * 2 * y * z
15abc 5 * 3 * a * b * c

14 How do you feel? topic.

15 Discuss with your partners what are some things you need to know to solve this problem (evidence from the problem itself). Discuss with your partners what are some things you need to know how to solve this problem (how are you going to solve it? What skills do you need?) Carolina is twice as old as her brother Diego will be in 3 years. Diego is 4 years old now. The expression below shows how to find Carolina’s age, in years. If not done yesterday

16 After discussing with your partners, on the bottom of your handout, you are going to do the ROUGH DRAFT of your open response. Label your parts to your work. Make sure to show evidence for your answers. Later you will write the FINAL DRAFT on the lined paper. Carolina is twice as old as her brother Diego will be in 3 years. Diego is 4 years old now. The expression below shows how to find Carolina’s age, in years. If not done yesterday

17 We are going to do the final draft of your open response that we started earlier. Make sure you have followed A.E.E. Answer Explain (in complete sentences) Evidence (show your work) Carolina is twice as old as her brother Diego will be in 3 years. Diego is 4 years old now. The expression below shows how to find Carolina’s age, in years.

19 Ticket-To-Go: -(-43) or 43 -(-5) or 5
Rewrite the expression in standard form (use the fewest number of symbols and characters possible). 3  4  5  m  n  n -(-43) or 43 -(-5) or 5

20 Accommodations Read or reread presentation or activity directions, as needed or after prompting Use examples to model and act as a guide for emerging learners
