Let’s read Chapter 4 up to Pg 58 – last line ending ‘…to which he’d never told anyone.’ Did anything puzzle you about this part of the story? What do you want to find out? In talk partners make a note of questions that you want to find out about and record on a post-it note.

3 Think of your tone of voice and even accent when reading.
WALT: understand how the author uses dialogue to show us what characters are like. Activity We are going to look at how different characters speak to one another. Divide class into groups of 5 to reread the conversation from pg. 52 to pg. 54. Each member of the group needs to take a role (David, Tucky, Ann, Mr. Reynolds and Narrator). If you don’t have five people, someone might have two roles. Think of your tone of voice and even accent when reading.

Activity Let’s focus on how the adults talked to the boys: Do you think they believed them straight away? What sort of tone did the adults use? What does this tell you about the characters?

Main Task You will now explore the officer’s thoughts and feelings, based on what he says and how he speaks. Answer the questions, in full, about the conversation between Mr. Reynolds and the officer. Your teacher will hand out the questions.
