3 Today’s focus: Intonation!
Talk to a neighbor! What is intonation? Make your own example sentences.

4 Statement Ending a statement, speaking turn, story.
Stress the nouns and let the tone fall at the end of each sentence. (Falling intonation) Parents go to work.

5 As we all know, parents go to work.
Intro Phrase When you want to preface your statement, use a rising tone. (Rising and Falling) As we all know, parents go to work.

6 Why do parents go to work?
Wh- Questions Rising and falling Why do parents go to work?

7 Yes/No Questions Rising Do you go to work?

8 Children go to school, but parents go to work.
First half, Second Half Rising and Falling Children go to school, but parents go to work.

9 Listing All items rise EXCEPT the last item. (Rising and falling)
Parents go to work, go grocery shopping, and cook dinner.

10 Repeated Question (Really!?)
Rising, falling, rising Statement- Parents go to work Parents go to work!?

11 DO NOT SHOW YOUR CARD TO ANYONE!
Read your sentence out loud! Listen to find a group with your same intonation type! “Wh” questions – rising then falling Yes/No questions- rising Statement/end of a speaking turn or story First half/second half: Clauses Listing 3. Sit down with your new group!

12 There should be 5 different groups Let’s hear your sentences!

13 Time to write! Use 2-3 of your sentences to make a short dialogue.
If your sentences don’t work, create your own! Use arrows to note rising and falling intonation

Read the Dialogue from Exercise 4 on Pg. 104. Record your voice. Practice your rising and falling intonation and thought chunking! You can listen to the sound file again online if you want!

What is most important to you in a job? 1.Record your opinion for at least 3 minutes. 2.Listen and comment on one other post!
