3 Characterization The definition of a character is based on implicit and explicit descriptions Direct characterization – Explicit characterization in which character traits are clearly detailed by the narrator or other speaker “Jane is a cruel person” Indirect characterization – Implicit characterization in which readers deduce the traits of a character through analyzing their speech, thoughts, appearance, and response from other characters “As Jane walked past the box labeled ‘Free Puppies,’ she glanced around her, then gave the box a swift kick.”
