1 HS Physical Science Spring 2017
EOCT Info HS Physical Science Spring 2017

2 What is GA Milestones? The Georgia Milestones EOG (end of grade) assessment is primarily a criterion-referenced test, designed to provide information about how well a student has mastered the grade-level state-adopted content standards in Science. FYI…the CRCT was criterion referenced

3 What is GA Milestones? (cont)
The Georgia Milestones measures will also include a limited sample of nationally norm-referenced items The nationally normed-items will provide a signal of how Georgia students are achieving relative to their peers nationally. FYI…the ITBS is nationally normed

4 What is GA Milestones? (cont)
The Grade 8 Science EOG assessment consists of 75 multiple-choice questions Most (of the 75 questions) contribute to a student’s criterion-referenced and/or norm-referenced score. 20 questions be norm-referenced and will provide a national comparison in the form of a national percentile rank 8 questions are field test items . These are newly written items that are being tried out and do NOT contribute to the student’s score.

5 What does this mean? Each student will receive one of four proficiency levels, depending on how well the student has mastered the content standards With the inclusion of the norm-referenced items, students may encounter items for which they have NOT received direct instruction. These items will NOT contribute to the student’s criterion-referenced proficiency designation; Only items that align to the course content standards will contribute to the criterion-referenced score Try your best if you see an item that is NOT aligned to the content learned as part of the course.

6 Content Domains HS P. Science
Chemistry: Atomic and Nuclear Theory and the Periodic Table (SPS1, SPS3, SPS4, SPS5) Chemistry: Chemical Reactions and Properties of Matter (SPS2, SPS6) Physics: Energy, Force and Motion (SPS7, SPS8) Physics: Waves, Electricity, and Magnetism (SPS9, SPS10)

7 High School End of Course: You WILL get a Periodic Table that looks as follows:

8 High School End of Course: You will get the reference sheet as follows:

9 Depth of Knowledge (DOK)
Items are developed with a particular emphasis on cognitive complexity or Depth of Knowledge (DOK) DOK is measured on a scale of 1 to 4 and refers to the level of cognitive demand required to complete a task (or in this case, an assessment item). The higher the level, the more complex the item;

10 Depth of Knowledge (Cont)
Higher levels do not necessarily mean more difficult items. For instance, a question can have a low DOK but a medium or even high difficulty level. Conversely, a DOK 4 question may have a low difficulty level but still require a great deal of cognitive thinking (e.g., analyzing and synthesizing information instead of just recalling it).

11 Level 1 Recall of Information Identify, list, or define
Recall who, what, when, and where Recall facts, terms, concepts, and trends May be asked to identify specific information contained in documents, excerpts, quotations, maps, charts, tables, graphs, or illustrations.

12 Level 2 Basic Reasoning Mental processing beyond recalling or reproducing a response. A Level 2 “describe” and/or “explain” would require students to go beyond a description or explanation of recalled information to describe and/or explain a result or “how” or “why.”

13 Level 3 Complex Reasoning
Reasoning using evidence, and thinking on a higher and more abstract level than Level 1 and Level 2. Students will go beyond explaining or describing “how and why” to justifying the “how and why” through application and evidence. Often involve making connections across time and place to explain a concept or “big idea.”

14 Level 4 Extended Reasoning
Complex reasoning of Level 3 with the addition of planning, investigating, applying significant conceptual understanding Will most likely require an extended period of time. Connect and relate ideas and concepts within the content area or among content areas in order to be at this highest level. Show of evidence, through a task, a product, or an extended response
