1 Phagocytosis 1. Watch the animation of phagocytosis on the screen
2. Use the craft materials to model Phagocytosis 3. On a revision card, draw a series of diagrams showing phagocytosis and make sure that you label White blood cell Pathogen Add a sentence describing what the white blood cell does

2

3 How do white blood cells protect the body?
Level 4 Also explain why we can catch flu a second time Level 6

4 How do white blood cells protect the body?
Level 4 Produce anti toxins Which break down toxins produced by bacteria Produce antibodies Which attach to the antigens on the pathogen And kill the pathogen Carry out phagocytosis Where the white blood cell surrounds, engulfs and digests the pathogen Influenza virus mutates Antigens change White blood cells produce antibodies that no longer fit Level 6

5 Describe how bacteria become resistant to antibiotics
Plan your answer on the whiteboard Then write your answer on a revision card from memory What are antibiotics What is the ONLY pathogen they kill How can we reduce the chance of antibiotic resistance developing? Level 4 Describe how bacteria become resistant to antibiotics Level 6

6 Antibiotics: Answers They are medicines that kill bacteria
Level 4 They are medicines that kill bacteria We can prevent them from bacteria becoming resistant to antibiotics by washing our hands, taking the full course and not prescribing them for minor infections Bacteria that are affected by the antibiotic mutate They can now survive treatment with the antibiotic They reproduce by binary fission And pass the mutated gene onto their offspring Level 6

7 Clinical Trials Arrange the cards on your desk into the correct places in the table Check it against the information sheet Use your phone to ake a photo for you to revise at home from

8 Vaccinations Collect a small table sheet and fill it in
What does a vaccine contain? Dead or inactive pathogens What does a vaccine make the patient make? Antibodies What will antibodies do to the invading pathogen? Kill it If you meet the pathogen again, give 2 ways that your response will be different More antibodies made Antibodies made faster Draw the shape of the graph that would show the difference in antibody production before and after a vaccination

9 Do Not Write On This Sheet
