1 What are the 5 layers of the atmosphere, in order from top to bottom?
Do Now What are the five components of the air we breath, in order from highest concentration to lowest? What are the 5 layers of the atmosphere, in order from top to bottom?

2 Module I: Section 1.1 Earth's Atmosphere

3 You will learn to identify the gases in Earth’s atmosphere.
Objectives: You will learn to identify the gases in Earth’s atmosphere. You will learn to describe the structure of Earth’s atmosphere. You will learn to explain what causes air pressure.

4 Atmospheric Gases Earth’s atmosphere extends from Earth’s surface to outer space. It is made up of a mixture of gases with some solids and liquids.

5 Types of Gases Nitrogen- 78%, Oxygen is second - 21%,
Argon- .93%, Carbon Dioxide- .03%, Other gases and water vapor- trace amounts

6 IMPORTANT… Water vapor in the atmosphere varies from 0 – 4%. The higher the water vapor, the lower the amount of other gases present.

7 Smog Smog is a type of pollution. The kind of smog affecting an area depends on its pollutants. Sources that cause smog include car exhaust, factories burning coal or oil.

8 Solids in the Atmosphere Dust, salt and pollen are three common solids in the atmosphere. Dust – Picked up by the wind Salt – Ocean spray Pollen – Given off by plants

9 Water is found in the droplets of clouds.
Liquid in the Atmosphere Water is found in the droplets of clouds.

10 Atmosphere's Structure
Exosphere is the uppermost layer. Beyond the exosphere lies space. Thermosphere contains a layer of electrically charged particles called the ionosphere. Mesosphere is the middle layer. Stratosphere contains ozone layer. Troposphere contains 75% of the gases. Weather clouds and smog occurs here.

12 Pressure from the Atmosphere Earth’s gravity pulls the gases from the atmosphere toward Earth creating pressure.

13 Air also thins making it harder to breath.
The higher you go the less particles there are, which means less pressure. Air also thins making it harder to breath.

14 Tempurature and Pressure
Where the atmosphere is heated, molecules have more energy. This creates a low pressure area. This brings warmer weather as well as storms and rain.

15 Tempurature and Pressure
Colder air has a higher density of molecules, and therefore creates higher pressure areas. Higher pressure areas bring cooler temperatures and clear skies.

16 Ozone Ozone is a natural gas that forms in the stratosphere. It is not normally found in the lower atmosphere, and if it is, it is considered a pollutant.

17 The ozone layer helps shield use from harmful energy from the sun.

18 Ozone is a form of oxygen.
The ozone molecules shield us from the harmful ultraviolet radiation (UV rays) that enters the atmosphere.

19 Ultraviolet Radiation
Ultraviolet radiation is one of the types of energy that comes from the sun. Too many UV rays can damage the skin, cause cancer, and other health problems for plants and animals.

20 Chlorofluorocarbons Chemicals called CFC’s break down the ozone into regular oxygen molecules. These molecules can not absorb the radiation.

21 Hole in the Ozone Layer The destruction of ozone molecules by CFCs seems to cause a seasonal reduction in ozone over Antarctica called the ozone hole.

22 Let's Review!!! The atmosphere is a mixture of ______, ______, and ______. The atmosphere has five layers including: ______, ______, ______, ______, and ______. The ______ is made up of electrically charged particles. Atmospheric pressure ______ with distance from Earth. Because some layers absorb the Sun’s energy more easily than others, the various layers have different ______. The ______ absorbs most UV light. ______ break down the ozone layer.
