2 General Introduction TalTech Library was established in Library’s primary mission is to support learning, teaching and research activities of the university. Since 1992 TalTech library serves as the public central technical library of Estonia. The new library building was completed in year It has 5 floors, there are 400 study places, a computer lab, and group and individual study rooms. Library’s collection includes over items and we provide campus-wide access to approximately e-journals and e-books.

5 1st Floor Main entrance Cloakroom 24/7 study room Lockers
Self Check-In Café Cloakroom Lockers Bindery Museum The 24/7 study room/night library is located on the first floor of the TalTech library building in room LIB-120. The room is open around the clock for all TalTech students and staff members for study and research purposes. The room is equipped with Wi-Fi, 6 computer workplaces, print/ copy device and 2 areas for group work. TalTech members can access the room with an Estonian Student Card, ISIC or ITIC card or with a TalTech staff card. Find more information at On the 1st floor beside the main entrance there is a self-service book return machine. Thanks to it you have the possibility to return books even when library is closed – every day

6 2nd Floor Entrance & Information Desk Service Centre & Help Desk
Computer Lab Self Check-out Soundproof phone booth Books and Journals on Economics and Social Sciences Library starts from the second floor. Outerwear and large bags should be left to the cloakroom. Coffee cups are also not allowed! At Service Centre you can use all library services: borrow and return books, renew due dates, make book reservations, pay overdue fines. In Help Desk you get answers to your questions and consultations on information retrieval. On 2nd Floor there is a self-service borrowing machine, a soundproof phone booth and a computer lab with 21 computers.

8 4th Floor Books and Journals on Engineering, Technology and IT
Individual and Group Study Rooms Quiet Study Area Soundproof phone booth Service Desk 4th Floor in the library is a quiet study area. It means no conversation, phones must be set to silent mode and calls made only in the soundproof phone booth. On 4th Floor you can borrow computer accessories – computer displays, mice, headphones, ID-card readers, portable power banks, scanner etc.

10 User registration Library card With Estonian ID-card
2 € register at the Information Desk With Estonian ID-card free of charge also online self-registration NB! Know your Student Code To use the library, you need to register as our library reader at the library’s Information Desk. Estonian ID-cards and residence cards can be used as library cards and the registration is then free of charge. There is also online self-registration available. You can also apply for a regular library card, which costs 2 euros. By user registration, it is recommended to know your Student Code. Student Code contains 6 numbers and letters, which show your study program. Please look it up in Studies Information System ÕIS and remember it!

11 Borrowing At any service desk Self Check-out on 2nd and 3rd floor
Open stack – pick a book Storage – fill out a call slip Up to 25 items at a time! For borrowing you can pick books from open stack and borrow them at any service desk with the help of librarian or you can use Self Check-out. To order books or journals from the storage you need to fill out the call slip and bring it to the service centre on the 2nd floor. Requests are fulfilled in 5-15 minutes. Students can borrow up to 25 items at a time. You can return books to any service desk or you can use the self-service book return machine (self check-in) on the 1st floor.

12 Loan Periods Generally 30 days Books with yellow spot – 14 days
Books with blue spot – 7 days Books with red spot and all journals – for in-library use only Textbooks on 3rd floor – 90 days General loan period in our library is 30 days. Books with shorter loan period are marked with different colours: books with a yellow spot on the cover are for two weeks, books with a blue spot are for one week and books with a red spot are for in-library use only. Textbooks can be borrowed for 90 days. Some very required and popular textbooks are for 30 days. To borrow textbooks you should know your student code. Journals are for in-library use only. In the open access area there are held journals of two last years, older journals are kept in storage – ask them from service centre on 2nd Floor.

14 Renewals and reservations
at service desks by by phone Renewals also by yourself in My ESTER. You can extend loans as many times as you need, it is not limited. You can’t extend your loan only if the book has reservations or your overdue fine is more than 3 euros. Then you need to return the book. When a book is already borrowed by somebody else, you can make a reservation for this book. You can have up to 10 reservations at the same time. When the book arrives to the library you will be noticed by or phone. You can pick up reserved books from service center on 2nd floor. You can renew your due dates also by yourself. By user registration you will get a bookmark with instructions – do not lose it!

15 Printing and copying Self-services with ID-card or Tallinn Public Transport Card Register your printing account at Add credits to your account Upload PDF files Choose a print point Print In City is a public print and copy service. Register your printing account at: Sign up with Google or Facebook account or with address. Add money to your account using Estonian bank account or PayPal. To identify yourself at the printer you need ID-card or Tallinn Public Transport Card – add the number of a suitable card to your account. For printing, upload your files in PDF format and choose a printing point. When you have set your address on the account settings page, you can upload documents also from your smartphone. In the library, printing devices are located in the in 24/7 study room (LIB-120), in the computer lab on 2nd floor and on 3rd floor. Only on 2nd floor there is a possibility for colored prints and copies. Also there are two devices in the hallway of Study Building number 4 and one in the IT building.

16 Scanning free of charge on every floor up to A4 size documents
Self-service: free of charge on every floor up to A4 size documents On-Screen Manual Instant service: placing orders on the 5th floor up to A2 size documents OCR Scanning as self-service is free of charge. In the library there are scanners on every floor. If you need help on scanning use On-Screen Manual or ask a librarian in Help Desk. To use scanning as an instant service please contact the librarian on the 5th floor. By instant service the document size can be up to A2 and there is a possibility for optical text recognition. It is also possible to borrow a scanner from the 4th floor service desk to connect it with your own laptop.

17 Study Rooms 6 Group Study Rooms on 3rd, 4th and 5th Floor:
all reservable online free of charge 26 Individual Study Rooms: 8 rooms on 3rd Floor – reservable online free of charge 14 rooms on 4th Floor – for walk-in use 4 rooms on 4th Floor – pay & get the key Library has 6 Group Study and 26 Individual Study Rooms. A Group Study Room is meant for 3 to 8 people. Group Study Rooms are located on the 3rd, 4th and 5th Floor and Individual Study Rooms on the 3rd and 4th Floor. On library’s webpage it is possible to book online all Group Study Rooms and Individual Study Rooms on the 3rd Floor. If you want to keep a study room for you and leave your belongings there, then it is also possible to book a room for a charge and get the key. Book a study room here: You need to log in with your My ESTER username and password.

18 Computers Log in with: Username and password you can find on the computer keyboard ID-card (PIN 1 is required) Uni-ID In the library there are 70 public computers. On the 2nd floor there is a Computer Lab with 21 PC-s, also there are 12 computers (PC-s) in front of the service desk. Computers on 3rd, 4th and 5th floor and in Group Study Rooms can be used for information retrieval, using USB devices and CD-s is not possible. Library computers contain Microsoft Office 2010 and Open Office  

19 Uni-ID – your TalTech username and password
Get it in: IT HelpDesk, SOC-129, phone , Uni-ID is your TalTech username and password to log in to university computers, to read TalTech , to use library’s e-resources outside the the campus network and for many other services. Ask your Uni-ID from university’s IT HelpDesk, room SOC-129 (contacts on the slide). Estonian ID-card owners can also log in to to get their passwords. 20 How to find e-books and scientific articles
E-resources portal PRIMO Campus-wide access Also by remote access login with Uni-ID Check the remote access manual on library’s webpage To find e-books and scientific articles, go to e-resources portal PRIMO – The portal enables to make a combined search among numerous databases provided by the library. With a simple search you will usually find too many results and you need to refine your search or use advanced search. To find only scientific articles, limit your search to peer-reviewed journals. When you have found an interesting book or article, just click on the title and it takes you to the database where it is available. You as a TalTech student can use e-resources also outside the campus thanks to the university’s remote access service. To use remote access service you need your Uni-ID (look previous slide). Check the remote access manual on library’s webpage!

On the top, you can find an important section for you – For Students. Beneath it you can search for books, journals, articles, and more. On the left side you can find library’s main information resources: Estonian online catalogue ESTER, e-resources portal PRIMO, databases and Digital Collection. The remote access manual you can find in the middle of the webpage. Also you can find here information about printing and copying and possibilities for renewing due dates. On the right side there is information about user registration and study room reservation. Also you can ask questions via the online form and you will receive a reply via within 24 hours.

22 Estonian online catalogue ESTER www.ester.ee
Estonian online catalogue ESTER is a shared catalogue of 18 Estonian biggest libraries. You can choose, do you want to search all libraries in Tallinn or choose a particular library. To find books from our library, choose TalTech Library (Akadeemia tee 1) from the drop-down menu in the left. You can search books by keyword, author, title, etc. Very useful are the self service opportunities of My ESTER.

23 How to find a book from open stack
When you have found a book you need from online catalogue ESTER, then observe the location (on which Floor this book lies). Write down or remember the book’s call number. Check also the status of the book – is it available, only for in-library use or already borrowed. By clicking on the little blue icon next to the status information, the floor plan and shelf number will be displayed to help you to find the book in the open shelves area. Click here

Shelves are numbered for better orientation. On the Floor plan the shelf you need to find is in red colour. Remember also the shelf number!

25 Subject names and numbers
Shelf number Find the right shelf! Books are organized by subjects and to every subject accords a certain number combination. You can see big labels on shelves with subject names and numbers. Within one subject books are sorted by languages. There are 3 language groups – first there are books in Estonian, then in other languages in Latin alphabet and then in Russian. Within one language group books are in alphabetical order. Subject names and numbers

27 My ESTER In My ESTER you can: see your checkouts renew their due dates
view your overdue fines see your book reservations etc. Very useful are the self-service opportunities of My ESTER. My ESTER is your personal area in the catalogue, where you can see your checkouts and renew due dates by yourself.

28 How to log in to My ESTER Click on the My ESTER link, choose Tallinn University of Technology Library. Your username is your library card barcode number or your Estonian personal code. Password will be given to you by user registration. With the same username and password you can reserve study rooms. If you forget or lose your password, click Forgot your password link. After entering your username, a temporary link will be sent to your for setting a new password. It is also possible to log in with ID-card, Mobile-ID or TalTech Uni-ID. If you need help on using My ESTER, read the user guide or ask help from Helpdesk. NB! Remember, that you do not need to log in to search books!
