2. Before The Israelites Choose a King
Around 1000 B.C., the strongest people living in Canaan were the Philistines
The Israelites began to worship their gods
The 12 tribes constantly quarreled
To unite against the powerful Philistines, they needed a king

3. Before The Rule of King Saul
Despite his warnings, Samuel the prophet did as the people wanted and chose a king (Saul)
He defeated many of the Israelite enemies
Saul displeased God by disobeying Him and God instructed Samuel to choose a new king

Warrior who defeated the giant Goliath at a young age
David took the throne after the death of Saul
He drove out the Philistines and established an empire
Israelites payed high taxes to expand the capital and build the temple
David died before the temple building

He built the temple, the center of the Jewish religion
Known for his wisdom and proverbs
At his death, 10 of the 12 tribes rebelled and formed a new country
North: Israel with Samaria as the capital
South: Judah with Jerusalem as the capital
