1 Common Leadership Styles
Dictator: “Do what I say” Team Builder: “Come with me” Relater: “People come first” Democrat: “Let’s decide together” Coach: “Try this” Analyzer: “Let’s evaluate all options” Dictator – demands immediate compliance. (Good for crisis, but erodes morale) Team Builder – Mobilizes people toward a vision, but allows them input on how to get there. (Good for morale and productivity in general, but doesn’t work as well when leading team of more experienced people, i.e. experts) Relater – Focuses on creating harmony and positive working relations. (Good for building trust where it has been lost or improving morale, but can allow poor performance to go uncorrected). Democrat – Encourages participation to forge consensus. (Good for difficult decisions, when leader uncertain about best direction to take, but can lead to endless meetings or situations where majority decision is not in best interest of company). Coach – develops people for the future based on their interests and motivations; allows employees to take on more responsibilities earlier and to even make mistakes for the sake of learning. (Good for improving employee performance, but only when employee is interested in self-improvement). Analyzer – relies more on technical and scientific input for decision making. (Good for avoiding making major errors, but time consuming and research can be costly)
