1 Bell Ringer What is the differences between human adaptation and human modification of the environment? Create your own defintion Adapt: to change your behavior so that it is easier to live in a particular place or situation Modify: to change some parts of (something) while not changing other parts

2 Modifying vs. Adapting Which pictures most shows MODIFYING the environment?

3 Modifying vs. Adapting Which pictures most shows ADAPTING TO the environment?

4 Modifying vs. Adapting Which pictures most shows ADAPTING TO the environment?

5 Modifying vs. Adapting Which pictures most shows MODIFYING the environment?

6 We change the environment and sometimes Mother Nature changes it back.
Nature continues to shape our environment and impacts where we live, how we live, and how we adapt and modify the environment What kind of place is it? People modify our environment by heating and coolings buildings for comfort.ハハ ハ One person's advantage may be another person's disadvantage.ハ Some like the excitement of large cities whereas others prefer remoteness.ハハ Environment is not just trees, spotted owls, and rain forests.ハ Environment is a feeling.ハ What is the environment of a big city?ハ Boston?ハ Los Angeles?ハ Dallas?Given the choice, where would you live?ハ Why?ハ What is the environment?ハ How do people interact with the environment?ハ How do the physical features affect us?How have we adapted to or changed our landscape? For example, in the Sudan even though everything is seemingly barren, the land sustains farmers and nomadic herders.ハ People and animals have adapted to a hot, dry climate. WUMPS WUMPS WUMPS

7 Human-Environmental Interaction
All people need food, water, clothing, and shelter. To meet these needs, people have to use materials from their environment. As a result, people have impacts on their environment.

8 Geographic characteristics - ESPN
Economic: the money making of society s Social/Cultural: the culture/beliefs of people in societies Political: The governing/laws of society Nature and society: interaction between environments and people

9 Political Interactions
Political-Government actions can affect the way countries modify their physical environment. Example- The Three Gorge Dam in China

10 Three Gorges Dam- world’s largest dam built on the Chang Jiang River in China

11 Positive Effects: Negative Effects: Flood control Improves irrigation
1-2 million people displaced 1000 towns and villages will disappear Loss of animal habitant, species Huge reservoir may affect climate and temperature in region Positive Effects: Flood control Improves irrigation Hydroelectricity Ships travel to interior of China

12 Partner Share In what ways do you think the government can cause changes to our physical environment?

13 Economic Interactions
Economy-the production and exchange of goods and services for monetary purposes. Example- St. Lawrence Seaway

14 St Lawrence Seaway- system of locks, canals, channels which allow large ships to travel from central North America, through the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean Opened in 1959 by Canada and US Allows Industrialized cities in interior of US and Canada Access to Global Markets. Provides Hydroelectric Power to region. Resulted in significant economic benefit to US and Canada

15 Where is the Saint Lawrence Seaway Located?

17 Think-Pair-Share Think about the economy of Houston, what are the main industries? How can humans modify the physical environment through economics?

18 Social Interactions Example Air conditioning
Air Conditioning- became widespread in the 1950’s resulting in increase growth of US southern cities (humans adapting to the environment) Social Interactions Social- How people interact with their living community.

21 Review Questions Think about the answer and wait to be called on…

22 Which physical process learned today best contributed to the pattern of settlement mentioned in the excerpt below?

23 Technology, irrigation systems, boundaries, and pollution are all examples of?
What invention caused a mass migration of people to Southern cities in the 1950’s

24 Teacher notes on following slides for students to copy into their notebooks. Lecture Notes in BLUE

25 Human Environmental Interaction Lecture Notes
Human interaction with the environment modifies the physical geography of the earth.

26 Economic- jobs, standard of living, poverty, technology, agriculture
