3 I. ITALY/EARLY 1800S a. Italy was not a country, but was divided up into different states, with their own government. b. Due to nationalism, the Italian-speaking people of Italy wanted to combine their separate states to form one united nation with one government.

5 II. MOVEMENT FOR UNITY a GUISEPPE MAZZINI organized group called Young Italy. People over 40 were excluded. : revolts broke out in eight states in Italy. 2. Mazzini headed a republican government in Rome in 1849. rebellions failed, and Mazzini and other nationalist leaders went into exile.

7 b. Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia.
1. Most powerful kingdom, ruled by King Victor Emanuel II.

8 2.1852: Camillo di Cavour named prime minister.
3.Cavour helped expand Sardinian power. 4. Allied with France ( Emperor Napoleon III) and gained control of Northern Italy.

10 c. GIUSEPPE GARIBALDI 1. May 1860: Cavour helped aid nationalist soldier Garibaldi and 1,000 soldiers known as the Red Shirts.

11 2. They captured Sicily and Naples.
3. Gave southern Italy to Cavour.

12 4.Proclaimed Victor Emmanuel II king of a UNITED ITALY!

capital of Italy.
