2 What we’re covering today
1. Planning for your future. 2. Executing on that plan. 3. Completing the experiential requirement. 4. Beginning to think about the bar exam.

3 the bar diagnostic At the conclusion of the spring semester, all first year full time day (and 2L evening) students will take a Bar Readiness Diagnostic during the exam period. All 1L Day and 2L Evening students are required to participate Although this assessment will not affect your grades, it will be scored to give you preliminary information about whether you are on track for success on the bar exam. You do not need to study for this assessment. You should take the assessment seriously and use the results to focus your future study efforts. Academic advising will be available to help you make the best use of the results. The Diagnostic is part of the law school’s initiative to help students succeed on the bar exam.

4 Remaining Curriculum Requirements
Professional Responsibility Evidence Constitutional Law II Civil Procedure II Scholarly Writing Experiential Live Client – 6 credits OR Live Client – 3 credits PLUS Simulation – 3 credits 87 Credits Do not wait until the last semester to take required courses.

6 RULES AND REASONING GPA below 2.8.
Connected to a doctrinal subject (e.g., R&R: Remedies; R&R: Employment Law) Will need to take in Fall 2019 or Spring Plan accordingly.

7 Experiential requirement --
6 credits 3 must be live client Clinics, externships, and workshops Timing Tip: Prereq & Coreq: Evid and PR Attorney externship counts, but not 2d externship and not judicial externship

8 Planning resources Degree Audit feature (called “Academic Requirements” on MyUB) Curriculum Document Academic advisors & Faculty/IL Mentors Law School’s Academic Policies and Procedures Manual Concentration plans (available under Forms on MyUB) – start planning for that now What kind of lawyer do you want to be? (link on Semester page) Concentrations: Business, Crim, Estate, Family Law, IP, Inter’l Law, Litigation & Advocacy, Public Service, and Real Estaten

9 Creating a roadmap FALL SPRING SUMMER 18/19 19/20
Add a skills or writing class so you don’t have 5 exams Get out there and do an externship Consider the flat rate tuition Take a bar-tested course each semester – don’t leave them for the end Your class has different requirements from those who started before 2015, so advice from upper level students may not always be accurate.

The test: MEE, MPT, and MBE (& MPRE) Getting ready? Courses to consider that are not required but are bar- tested: Business Orgs, Conflicts, Con Crim Pro, Family Law, Sales & Leases, Secured Trans, T&E. Specific Bar Helpful classes: Summer MPT Class and Essential Skills for the Bar.

13 A Word about taking courses elsewhere
At Maryland Law & Other Law Schools At other Graduate Schools Online Courses Abroad Required Classes must be taken here. Can take electives at Md or other law school. Fill out IIR form. Can visit at another rlaw school but still must take required courses here. May take up to 6 preapproved classes at grad schools – must be at the 600 level or higher if at UB . Online – no more than 15 credits for distance ed. Offering COL Summer. Most likely another course this spring.
