3 Grammar Sheet Definitions
Restrictive: a phrase or clause that limits the noun/pronoun to one and only one; it clarifies what your are talking about. NO COMMAS. Nonrestrictive: a phrase or clause that does not need to limit the noun/pronoun. COMMAS.

4 Adjective Clause Examples
The water, which was calm yesterday, is rough today. NONRESRTICTIVE Cartoonists use a variety of unusual names for the symbols that commonly appear in the funnies. RESTRICTIVE Please read the lap which is essential for learning. The grammar chart, that is on your desk, will help you understand grammatical structure.

5 Collaborative Writing Prompt
Part One: Write a paragraph (7-10 sentences). Tell a story using the photograph as inspiration. Your challenge is to describe the photo without telling what the picture is. Refer to “A Palette of Sensory Words” and be sure to use descriptive adjectives. I have prepared an example.

7 Painting a Picture with Words
As I approached the elegant castle, the two stared at me with their immense, black round eyes. I was overwhelmed with joy. Although, I was there now as an adult, the nostalgic feeling came rushing through my bones. The smell of funnel cake enveloped my senses as my nostrils flared. The sounds of innocent children giggling surrounded me. There were no cares in the world. I was truly in the “happiest place on earth”. No wonder it is every super bowl champs dream to visit. The scorching sun beat down on me as beads of sweat dripped down my temples. But I did not care about how hot I was, it was a mere reassurance of the joy I was feeling in this blissful world. The two that greeted me were the main event. The big cheese. Their smiles were contagious; the most recognizable of their kind. Glaring into their childlike faces, I was reminded that “it all started with a mouse”.

Reader Listener Read your story to your partner. Give your partner undivided attention while she reads her story. As she reads, draw a picture of what you imagine she is describing in her story. Pay attention to the sensory details.

Part Three: Switch roles (if time permits) Part Four: Reveal your drawings Highlight the adjectives and adjective clauses that helped your partner “see” your image. Be sure to keep your paragraph; we will be using them next class as well.

10 Homework due next class
Write ten sentences that contain an adjective clause. Please highlight each adjective clause. Fill in the compound subjects and compound verbs portion of your grammar sheet. Please come to open lab if you have questions.
