2 Who are YOU? You are a unique individual that functions within a family, community, and a society. There are boundaries within which you must function. What are some examples of these boundaries? Recognize the balance between rights and responsibilities. What happens if we don’t function between these boundaries? M.Beard

The group of behavioral and emotional traits that distinguishes an individual All that a person has been, is now, and hopes to be Sum total of our experiences M.Beard

5 Factors that Shape Our Personality
Heredity Traits that are determined by heredity are called INHERITED traits. Environment Traits that are determined by environmental factors are called ACQUIRED traits. Family – friends – home – siblings – school environment – peers – community – media - technology M.Beard

7 Famous Person Activity
In your head, identify one famous person. On each post-it note, write a characteristic of that person that has made them successful. If a characteristic is an AQUIRED trait, place it on the Environment side of the bulletin board. If a characteristic is an INHERITED trait, place it on the Heredity side of the bulletin board. Growth Pattern – the unique way a person grows Types of growth: Chronological Physical – sudden growth spurts, puberty, : Eating right, sleep Intellectual: thinking abstractly: love, loyalty developing logic develop new skills/use your brain!/ Emotional Social - Philosophical M.Beard

In groups of 3-4, make a poster about one of the areas of growth. Poster should include: Name of growth Definition of growth in own words An example of this growth One picture (magazine or drawn) that represents this growth M.Beard

Paying taxes Staying informed on public affairs Voting Citizenship in your local community: Volunteerism is giving or offering services of your own free will. You are also part of a global community, meaning that your local community impacts the world in many ways. M.Beard

13 What does it mean to be a good citizen?
A citizen is a person who owes loyalty to a government and is entitled to the protection of the government. Citizenship in the USA Right to vote Equal treatment under the law Freedom of speech, worship and other privileges listed in the Bill of Rights Government services (police protection and military defense) M.Beard

14 Volunteering Find one volunteer activity in the White County area that you would enjoy doing. Info to find out: Name of agency of place What you would be doing How often you would be there If any money is required Suggestions: churches, government websites M.Beard

16 Self-Concept Your self-concept is the way that you see yourself.
What is part of your self-concept? Physical characteristics Personality How is your self concept formed? Comparing yourself to others Comments from family and friends You are who you think you are! M.Beard

17 Self-Esteem Self-Esteem is how you feel about yourself.
A person with good self-esteem feels like they are a good and worthwhile person. They believe in themselves! How does self-esteem influence behavior? M.Beard

18 Building Self-Esteem How can you build positive self-esteem?
Practice positive self-talk. Accept the things about yourself that you cannot change. Focus on the present. Take one step at a time. Be a friend to yourself. M.Beard

19 Character Character is the sense of right and wrong that guides your behavior. It is the part of your personality that helps you make choices that are in line with your personal priorities. Character development begins at childhood! Rules and guidelines help you build character and guide behavior. School Rules Laws True character is revealed when you are in tough situations! M.Beard

Self-Discipline – to be able to direct self and control behavior in achieving goals. Responsibility – to be accountable for your actions Honesty and Integrity – to be real, genuine, truthful. To respect self and others. Loyalty – To care sincerely about the well-being of friends, family and country. M.Beard

Compassion and Mercy – To take seriously the realities of other persons, their lives, and their emotions. Motivation and Hard Work – Inner urge that prompts individual to take positive action. Perseverance – sets realistic goals and works hard to achieve them. M.Beard

22 Values Flyer Creating a flyer focusing on one value.
Find a picture to represent that value. Create a catch-phrase to emphasize the value. Use a template similar to Values campaign or create your own. M.Beard
