4 Future Seniors- Choices:
Future Sophomores - Choices: Biology Honors Biology I Chemistry I (if biology already completed) Honors Chemistry I (if biology already completed) Future Juniors-choices: Chemistry I Honors Chemistry II Physics Ecology Forensic Science Principles of Biomedical Science Anatomy & Physiology ONLY if taken concurrently w/Chemistry Future Seniors- Choices: Chemistry I Honors Chemistry II Physics Ecology Forensic Science Anatomy & Physiology

5 Biology College prep course Major Topics Include: Ecology Biochemistry
Cell Biology Genetics Evolution Kingdoms of Life Emphasis on lab experience/cooperative learning Prerequisites: Physical Science teacher recommendation

6 Honors Biology I College prep course
Topics covered same as Regular Bio, but: Greater depth Rigorous expectations Heavier workload Required reading during the year Emphasis on higher level critical thinking and analytic skills Required if plan to take Honors Biology II for college credit or to take the AP Bio Exam Prerequisite: Physical science recommendation

7 Chemistry College preparatory course Major Topics Include:
Metric System/Sig Figs Composition of Matter Elements Atomic Structure Periodic Table Chemical Bonding/Reactions Moles Emphasis on laboratory technique & computer skills Kansas Board of Regents requires either 1 year of chemistry or 1 year of physics for Qualified Admissions Prerequisites: Biology, Algebra I, enrolled in higher math & science teacher recommendation

8 Honors Chemistry College preparatory course
Covers same material as Regular Chemistry, but: More rigorous schedule/assignments Designed for students with aptitude in math/science Required for those who want to take Honors Chemistry II for college credit Includes additional topics: gas stoichiometry, thermochemistry, acid/base chemistry, chemical kinetics, redox reactions, electrochemistry, and nuclear chemistry Kansas Board of Regents requires either 1 year of chemistry or 1 year of physics for Qualified Admissions Prerequisites: Biology/Honors Bio I, Algebra I, enrolled in higher math and science teacher recommendation

9 Physics Major Topics include: Matter & Energy Measurements
College preparatory course Major Topics include: Matter & Energy Measurements Motion/Momentum Newton’s Law Vector Quantities/Addition Forces/Gravitational Law Emphasis on laboratory technique & computer/graphing skills with probe ware This course is mathematical in nature Kansas Board of Regents requires either 1 year of chemistry or 1 year of physics for Qualified Admissions Prerequisites: Algebra II and Geometry (previously/concurrently enrolled) and science teacher recommendation

10 Ecology Ecology DOES count as KS Board of Regents science credit requirements to graduate high school AND attend college. Major Topics include: Ecological Principals Sustainability Human Impact on Biosphere Biomes Recycling/Stewardship of Earth Emphasis on Cooperative Work and Research Students are also responsible for the care & maintenance of the OWLS outdoor wildlife area Participation in the district-wide recycling program is required Prerequisites: Biology and science teacher recommendation

11 Forensics Science Comprehensive
This course is a qualified admissions science credit course for both graduating high school and attending college. It is designed for students on the Law Enforcement Career Pathway track; however, it is open to all students Major Topics include: Forensic Science Careers Crime Scene Analysis Serology (blood analysis) Fingerprinting Trace Evidence Firearms and Bullet Trajectory Skeletal Remain Analysis DNA Fingerprinting Entomology Emphasis on “hands-on” learning, critical thinking, and problem solving Prerequisites: Biology, Geometry, science teacher recommendation

12 Anatomy & Physiology College preparatory course or Newman college credit with cumulative 3.0 GPA Course is designed for students who have a strong desire to go into some medical or related field as doctors, nurses, technicians, and/or therapists Anyone who has interest in physical education and/or coaching are also encouraged to take this course Major Topics include: Biological Review Tissues/Skin Bone/Muscle Major Organ Systems Cat dissection IS REQUIRED & CADAVER LAB VISIT This is an Honors level course and DOES REQUIRE SUMMER HOMEWORK Prerequisites: Biology & previous/concurrent enrollment in Chemistry and science teacher recommendation

13 Honors Chemistry II SUMMER COURSEWORK is required
College preparatory course in which you can obtain Newman college credit if you have a 3.0 cumulative GPA Major Topics include: Atomic Structure Stoichiometry Reaction Types (including REDOX) Acids/Bases Gases Thermochemistry Periodicity Electron Structure/Bonding Solution Properties Nuclear Chemistry Chemical Kinetics Solubility Product Constants Electrochemistry SUMMER COURSEWORK is required Prerequisites: Honors Chemistry I and science teacher recommendation

14 Principles of Biomedical Science
This is the introductory course of the PLTW Biomedical Science program, students explore concepts of biology and medicine to determine factors that led to the death of a fictional person. While investigating the case, students examine autopsy reports, investigate medical history, and explore medical treatments that might have prolonged the person’s life. The activities and projects introduce students to human physiology, basic biology, medicine, and research processes while allowing them to design their own experiments to solve problems.  Intended for Juniors Once section will be offered 1 credit, full year course
