Course and Contact Information: Location Room 124 Instructor: Mrs, Edens Phone: Website: cbedens/, Office/tutoring hours: What we will read We will be reading and analyzing short stories, poems, Romeo and Juliet, The Miracle Worker, To Kill a Mockingbird, essays and articles. In this course we will Read closely and analyze a range of complex literary and informational texts. Learn to value evidence and incorporate it effectively in writing and speaking. Will notice language choices and understand how writers and speakers use specific words and sentences to move the thoughts, emotions, and actions of readers and listeners. All freshmen will be participating in College Board Pre-AP curriculum. Pre-AP English 1 focuses on the close reading, analytical writing, and language skills that have immediate relevance for students across their current courses and that are most essential for their future work in high school, college, and careers Students will also be mastering the AZ English Language Arts Standards. What we’ll accomplish We will have a great time learning how to access texts on a deeper level, strengthen writing skills, delve into the world of literature, use higher-level thinking skills and approaches, all the while appreciating what it means to be part of this program. 6. PARTICIPATION – You will earn (i) two points for participation in this class every day. These points will be essential to your success in this class. To earn your points you will have to follow all classroom rules and will have to participate in class discussions and work. Participation points will make up a substantial part of your grade. 7. PASSES - You need to use the restroom during your passing period. If you have an emergency discreetly ask for (j) permission to go. I will contact parents of students who have frequent “emergencies”. If you have a medical condition that warrants frequent bathroom visits, your parents need to notify the nurse. You can also ask me for a nurses’ pass for medical needs. 8. CONDUCT – All behavior in class and outside of class must be governed by our foundation values: (k) courage - respect - influence Other guidelines to follow: A. Be (l) in your seat and be ready to work when the bell rings. Start your bell work right away. Do not leave your seat without (m) permission. B. No disruptive or disrespectful behavior. C. (n) Raise your hand and wait for permission to talk. D. Follow instruction the first time given. ATTENDANCE/TARDIES – Red Mountain High School mandated tardy and attendance policies will be strictly followed. You need to make up any work that you miss because of tardy sweep. (a)Ten or more absences, excused or unexcused will mean (b) loss of credit. 2.MATERIALS – I expect you to have a (c) pen, pencil, and paper with you every class period. You will also need a (d) a student planner for recording homework, one (1) three-ring binder, and 5 dividers. 3. CHEATING –(e) Plagiarized papers will receive a zero, as will cheating on a test. It takes two people to cheat; therefore, (f) both parties will receive a zero. Parents may also be contacted. There is absolutely no talking during testing times. 4. FOOD AND DRINK – I allow (g) no food or drink in my room. Please do not even bring it in the room to throw in the trash. You can bring water in a closed container. 5. USE OF TIME – I expect each student to use each minute of class time wisely. If you finish your work before the rest, please work on other assignments, or read your (h) independent reading book. . ……………………………………………………………………………………………

GRADES: I grade on a point system. Your grade will be based on a cumulative record of all your assigned work. Speaking/Listening/Participation (discussions, etc.) - 15% Reading - 20% Writing PROCESS - 20% Language (grammar & vocabulary) - 15% Summative Assessments (including major essays, presentations, midterms, & final exams) - 30% The semester grades are cumulative Final exams are given at the end of each semester. Final exam counts as a regular assignment in the Summative Assessments category E. No (o) cell phones,ear buds, personal grooming products in class. If I see or hear these items I will take them away and keep them for the rest of the day. (MIR) After repeated offences I will turn them in to the grade level administrator.(ODR) 9. DRESS CODE – You must follow Mesa Public Schools dress code policies as listed in your student handbook. 10 HOMEWORK – Your constant homework assignment is to practice (p) vocabulary and (q) read. Other homework will also be assigned on a regular basis. Homework is due at the beginning of the period. 11. LATE WORK – Students will not receive the responsibility component of the score when turning in late work. Late work must be submitted with a (s) pink slip. If you have an excused absence on a day an assignment is due you must turn in the assignment the day (t) you return. When you miss class work because of an absence, you have to make up the missing work. If you do not make up your work you will receive a zero on the missing assignments regardless of whether the absence was excused or unexcused. Late work and make up work is accepted for (u) two weeks after the due date, but all work must be made up within the quarter it was assigned. ……………………………………………………………………………………………

13. HELP! and MAKE UP WORK I am here to help you learn! If you have any questions, please ask me. I am available to help you during tutoring hours and after school by appointment. Your parents are also encouraged to call or me any time they have a question or concern. Work hard and you will have a successful experience! You and your parents can check your grades at any time by logging on to the Parent Portal. Your parents will have to set up an account for you to be able to check your grades. Supplies necessary for this class: Lined paper, pencil, black or blue pen, red pen, 3-ring-binder (2”), 5 dividers. Helpful, but NOT required: headphones. Please let me know if you cannot provide these supplies, and I will find a way to supply them for your child.
