The Earth is a System Scientists used to study the Earth only through its 4 separate branches. They did not see how these branches connected. The Earth is actually a system of parts that work together to make it function. In a system, matter and energy are transferred. Matter: Anything that has mass and takes up space Energy: The ability to do work (forms: heat, light, vibrations, waves)

The Earth is a System
10
Types of Systems Open System: A system in which both matter and energy are exchanged with the surroundings Closed System: A system in which energy, but not matter, is exchanged with the surroundings The Earth is made up of open systems, but the Earth itself is a closed system.

The Earth’s Spheres The Earth’s 4 spheres store all of the matter in the Earth and allow it to be transferred. Atmosphere: Matter in the gaseous form (air) Hydrosphere: Matter in the liquid form (water) Geosphere: Matter in the solid form (rock, soil) Biosphere: Living (organic) matter Once matter in this sphere dies, it goes to the other spheres.
