The students will describe Harding’s efforts to return the United States to normalcy after the progressive era reforms by identifying the scandal that plagued Harding’s administration Announcement: Chapter 12 Test Friday Drill: Read 1 American’s story on page 436 and answer the following: 1. What challenges did most Mexican immigrants face when they came to the United States? 2. How did the inhabitants of the barrios treat newcomers?

A Return to “Normalcy” Warren Harding/Calvin Coolidge defeated James Cox/Franklin Roosevelt Working for Peace Kellogg-Briand Pact renounced war as an instrument of national policy no way to enforce the pact High Tariffs and Reparations U.S. pursued an isolationist policy Britain/France owned U.S. bankers $10 billion export more goods to U.S. reparations from Germany Dawes Act-U.S. repaid with its own money Britain/France upset U.S. was demanding repayment

His political friends used their power for graft Teapot Dome Scandal Oil reserves once held by the navy were transferred to the Interior department Albert Fall sold these reserves to 2 companies in exchange for cash and gifts Harding died August 2, 1923 of a brain hemorrhage or a heart attack
