Aim: How did North and South become divided throughout the early 1800s? Do Now: Compare and Contrast the North and the South in the early 1800s.

8 Missouri Compromise Keep the balance of free states vs. slave states
Free states would dominate Congress States = representatives If there are more slave states represented in Congress, then more laws could be passed to keep slavery If there are more free states, then laws could be passed to abolish slavery

9 Missouri Compromise New territories that become states – should slavery be banned? Maine – free state. Missouri – slave state. Keeps the balance All states north of 36°30’ line of latitude – no slavery All states south of 36°30’ line of latitude – slave states

To outlaw slavery in any territory gained by the war with Mexico It does not become law Free-Soil Party – political party dedicated to stopping the expansion of slavery

11 The Compromise of 1850 California becomes a state
Tipping the balance of slave and free states The compromise California would be a free state No laws regarding slavery for the rest of the territories won from Mexico Law to help slaveholders recapture runaway slaves
