1 USP-IAG Universidade de São Paulo
Brazilian Tunable Filter Imager (BTFI) Preliminary Design Review (PDR)‏ Management Summary (Keith Taylor) Version 1.0 USP-IAG Universidade de São Paulo 18-19th June 2008 1

2 Compliance Matrix Science requirements Interface requirements
BTFI almost completely compliant with Science requirements Interface requirements Compliance Matrix incorporated into Requirements Document as updated since CoDR So what are the exceptions?

3 Non- (or partial) compliance
Each filter wheel contains a maximum of 4 filters Filter wheel is under remote operation (unplanned at PDR) FPs cannot be removed from instrument w’out dismantling No angular adjustment of FPs Full-up weight still uncertain but is of decreasing concern New iBTF gratings will be aligned in SOAR telescope optics lab Non-exitant, but strong lobby from Tighe (and ourselves) Director says “$$s available” Optics procurement Unmounted or in barrels (tbc)? – await final optics bids Camera shutter – woops; forgot about this! CryoTiger not LN2 Commissioning to Hand-over support logistics (tbd)

4 Risk Register Organised, as follows
Available on Wiki as an Excel Spread-sheet Organised, as follows

5 My favourite risks Operation & Maintenance SAM interface Optics
Detector controller CCCP-v1 result encouraging Reliability & Maintainability uncertain Etalon controller Absolute capacitance servo - Gravity effects? SAM interface SAM availability – what is role of BTFI in SL-mode? Optics FP performance – unproven technology Pipe-line Data Reduction Robust but user-friendly algorithmics Scientific impact requires avoidance of off-line DR, if at all possible

6 Optics/iBTF/FPs

7 Structure & Mechanics

8 Detector System

9 Software, Integration Test & Commissioning

10 Conclusions (from PM perspective)
Capable, well-motivated, team Geographic dispersion appears not to be a problem Opportunities to involve post-docs from USP and elsewhere Adequate budget with opportunities to bid for enhancements More gratings, filters, contingencies etc Technology (iBTF, EMCCD, SESO, 2-channel) Excitingly, new but tractable Not everything has to work at 1st light Opto-mechanical design - compliant with science goals Credit to Damien & Rene Electronics & Software - under control Positive interaction with SOAR staff SAM availability - biggest concern from a science impact perspective In the interim: is it possible to give BTFI a 6arcmin. seeing-limited FoV?
