2 Langston Hughes Hughes celebrated the experiences of African Americans, often using jazz rhythms and the repetitive structure of the blues in his poems. Hughes wrote several poems called “Harlem.”

3 Literary Terms Rhythm -- The alternation of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line of prose or poetry. Simile – A comparison using like, as, than, or resembles. Alliteration – Repetition of similar consonant sounds in words that are close together Example -- Mary had a little lamb.

4 Literary Terms Onomatopoeia – Use of words that actually sound like what they name. Example – boom, drip, bang Mood (p. 828) – The overall feeling created in a piece of writing. Imagery (p. 833) – The use of language to create pictures.

5 Literary Terms Repetition – The recurrence of certain sounds, words, phrases, or lines in a poem to achieve rhythmic or emotional effects. Refrain – A repeated line

6 Quickwrite (p. 824) Jot down your associations with the word blues and the music it describes. What feelings or words are associated with blues music? Is there any blues influence on the music you like?
