1 Our Intergenerational Challenges
Dr Tahu Kukutai Te Pae Roa, 4 September 2014

2 The MDD (Māori Demographic Dividend)
Professor Natalie Jackson 2010 The MDD (Māori Demographic Dividend) We have two very different transitions that have taken place in NZ with the result being very different age structures. This gives rise to a number of challenges and opportunities. Median age in 2013: Just under 24 years cf 38 nationally. NZ TFR high by OECD standards – 2.06 (cf OECD average 1.7). Israel highest at 3.0; France about 2.0. Maori TFR now 2.51

3 * CHAMPION OUR RANGATAHI *
More than just investing; actively championing Changing the way we think – a taonga to be nurtured; not a risk to be managed

Reciprocity: cultural, economic, social resources Thinking beyond the NZ nation state Point of difference as transnational indigenes

6 The Growing Divide Within
Many of the inequalities that we observe are replicated within Te Iwi Maori; within our own whanau, extended and immediate. What is the economic futures that we want – child poverty, work poor households, precarious This picture of two young women comes from a story associated with the proposal to offer contraception to beneficiaries. The story is predictably deficit-focused and patronising, but the questions raised by the stark comparison of growing tribal wealth and the needs of local youth remains an important one. See:

7 * ?? * What level of future inequality can we live with? How to avoid replicating systems of inequality? Intergenerational transmission of privilege + paucity What’s most important - equality of opportunity or outcomes? INTER + INTRA-generational challenge
