1 Who Am I? Advisory Lesson

2 Celebrity “Who Am I?” I will tape a card to your shirt.
Find a partner and ask them questions about the celebrity on your back until you figure out who you are. They can only be yes/no questions.

3 You are an Iceberg! What is an Iceberg? How is a person like an iceberg?

4 Personal Culture/Identity is like an Iceberg –
It has some aspects that are observable, but most others can only be suspected, imagined, or intuited.

5 Think Back What kind of questions did you ask to find out what celebrity you were during the game? Did you ask about… Gender? Race? Age? Profession? These are “Surface Questions” because they only represent what others can see about a person at a glance. They do not represent the whole of a person’s identity or culture!

6

7 Waterline of Visibility
Below the surface is where you find a person’s values, beliefs, ideas, traditions, experiences…all the other things that make a person who they are. These things cannot necessarily be known about a person just by looking at them! This is why it is so important to TALK with people before judging or making assumptions about who a person is!

8 Activity- What is your Iceberg?
Draw an iceberg and a waterline of invisibility. On the top of the iceberg, label the parts of you that you show to others. Underneath, label the parts of you that people at school may not see. What are some of your fears? What are some responsibilities you have at home that others may not know? What are some challenges you have had that you don’t talk about?

9 Exit Slip - Reflection How is what’s beneath the water line equally or more important than what’s above it?
