1 Wednesday, September 15th
It’s a Beautiful Day! Today you will need: Science notebook signatures (if you don’t already….) AUP signatures

2 How Do Scientists Work Together to Solve Problems?
(Read: DIV 3)

3 Think – Pair - Share Do you ever think about what scientists do?
What do you think scientists are like? What kind of people become scientists? What do people do when they do science?

4 Teacher Talk “Scientists answer big questions, and that is what you are going to be doing this year. The first Big Question you are going to answer is: How do scientists work together to solve problems? Because this is a Big Question, you are going to answer a lot of smaller questions along the way. You’ll solve some problems the way scientists would solve them, and by the end of this Unit, you’ll have an answer to the Big Question. ”

5 The Book-Support Challenge
(Read: DIV 4)

6 Teacher Talk “Imagine that you need glasses to read, but you forgot them. You have to copy some text from a book into the computer but you cannot read the text when it is on the desk. The challenge is to design a book support. It must be a certain height above the desk so that you can read the text. It must hold the book open, and it must allow you to turn the book’s pages. All you have available at your desk are index cards, paper clips, rubber bands, and a ruler. What will you do?”

7 Book-Support Challenge 9/15/10
4 Book-Support Challenge 9/15/10 Read: DIV 5 Criteria: what goals must be accomplished? Constraints: what are the limitations in how we can do this? Materials: Criteria: support a book 7.5 cm (3 in) above the desk Constraints: materials, 10 min 50 note cards 50 paper clips 50 rubber bands ruler Summary:

8 Challenge Set-Up Your Team: Table Groups (Number 1-4)
Job #1: Collect Materials Job #2: Clock Watcher Job #3: Clean-Up Job #4: Reporter

9 Reminders Each student has probably starting thinking about how to build the book already Each student should contribute their thoughts Listen to each other Test ALL ideas out Decide as a GROUP on the best design and build it

10 Book-Support Challenge 9/15/10
4 Book-Support Challenge 9/15/10 Read: DIV 5 Criteria: what goals must be accomplished? Constraints: what are the limitations in how we can do this? Materials: Criteria: support a book 7.5 cm (3 in) above the desk. Constraints: materials, 10 min Materials Used: note cards = paper clips = rubber bands = inches/cm = 50 note cards 50 paper clips 50 rubber bands ruler Summary:

11 Reflection Draw a picture of your book-support system in your science notebook (left-side). Don’t forget to use at least 3 colors! Complete the Reflection worksheet with your science partner and/or table group. Fold the reflection paper in half and tape it to the inside of your notebook – page 4.

12 Share Your Designs How is your design constructed?
(Read: DIV 5) How is your design constructed? Why did you design it the way you did? How did the constraints affect the design? What things did you think about or try before getting to this design?

13 How do scientists work together to solve problems?
Review - Exit Ticket Imagine it is 3:00 pm and you just got home from school. You have a pet dog that needs to go out for a walk and be fed before it gets dark at 6:00 pm. You also have estimated that you have 3 hours of homework to do and it must be done by 7:00 pm. Your challenge is to get it all done. List the criteria and constraints of this challenge. Criteria Constraints Summary in notebook: Less than 30 words 3-5 sentences How do scientists work together to solve problems?
