1 Cold War Hotspots

2 Berlin Airlift 1948 Stalin tried to force the Western Allies out of Berlin by sealing off every railroad and highway. Western powers responded by airlifting supplies to the West Berliners.

3 Berlin Wall 1961 Khrushchev, to stop people from fleeing eastern communist countries, had East Germany construct a wall around West Berlin.

4 Cuban Missile Crisis 1962 there was a nuclear standoff between the US (President Kennedy) and the USSR (Khrushchev). USSR was asked by Cuban leader Fidel Castro to put nuclear missiles on Cuba a mere 90 miles off the coast of Florida.

5 Korean War 1950 Communist forces in North Korea invaded South Korea. United Nations sent forces to repel the invasion. President Truman sent troops as part of a UN coalition. Still divided today.

6 Vietnam War 1963 US sends troops to help democratic South Vietnam fight off communist North Vietnam. A long and costly war. US pulls out by Vietnam is united and a communist country.

7 Cracks in Iron Curtain Poland Lech Walesa and dock workers formed a group called Solidarity, a workers organization with millions of members. The government outlawed the movement. Walesa was jailed, eventually due to international pressure he was released and in 1989 Poland held free elections and Lech was elected President of a democratic Poland. Joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union (EU) in 2004

8 Cracks in Iron Curtain Hungary- a revolution began in Hungary led by Imre Nagy. He ended one party rule, got rid of Soviet troops and withdrew from the Warsaw Pact. Revolt squashed by USSR. Thousands died and Soviets regained control. Later held free elections and a new constitution.

9 Cracks in Iron Curtain Czechoslovakia –In the spring of 1968 Alexander Dubcek called for reforms and easing of communist control. Soviet Union sent in troops, put down the rebellion and restored a communist dictatorship. Later Vaclav Havel elected president chose to split in to Czech Republic and Slovakia

10 Cracks in Iron Curtain East Germany – East Germans want to share in the prosperity enjoyed by West German citizens. A rising wave of protest led to the communist government opening the border in Berlin in November The Wall comes down and by 1990 East and West Germany are reunited.

Romania- Bloody revolution to overthrow dictator Nicolae Ceausescu – he was executed

12 End of Cold War Détente - easing of tensions and improved relations between the US and the USSR SALT I and SALT II – Strategic Arms limitations treaties to limit nuclear build up
